Device to stop Pecking--

Looked at this thread...because I posted it for someone...

Yes, part of the plastic goes in the nostril. My hen has worn these ever since I first posted. She has had no breathing problems, continues her daily egg. She is (at least in her opinion) the dominant hen. She will chase the others (especially the pullets who are actually laying now) away from trays of food. -- I feel comfort knowing that she can't really hurt anyone.

IN some cases, if a hen is particularly dominant or mean...it could be the difference between staying with the flock and other alternatives.

My conclusion is that they do no harm at all.

Really interesting. Would love to hear from others who have used these.

I've resorted to pinless peepers on several occasions. I really feel bad for the hens. I feel like they have trouble seeing to eat and it's forced a few hens into a hard ugly molt. But I will say that they do work and work instantly. Last week, I had a hen just go after a broody. She was using her feet to scratch and claw at her while she pecked at her. I was leaving to go out of town and couldn't isolate one or the other safely. I worry about them kicking over their water. So I put a peeper on the bully for three days till I returned and could move the broody to a dog crate to break her.

Once she wasn't broody, the bully is perfectly fine again. Go figure.

My point is, having something like this on hand, especially for us small back yard flock owners is SUPER handy.

I agree but i worry abotu the hens too. the old way was a hatchet. But lately i had some eggs get holes in them when i crushed the oyster shells smaller no more eaten eggs anow we are getting 6 eggs a day all new layers . MY babies are buisy

Can anyone from the USA tell me where to buy Bumpa-bits here?

I did obtain some Bumpa-bits from E-Bay UK awhile back and the things were too long. My hen could not eat with the long Bumpa-bit installed as it protruded a quarter-inch beyond her beak. The one pictured on this thread is the size chickens should have and what I'd like to obtain.

It's been mentioned other places on this site that these can now be found in the USA. Can anyone help me?

I have just gotten a version of these off the Murray McMurray website. Haven't tried them yet as I had the same concerns as everyone here but they definitely sound like an acceptable solution for my bully. Thanks!
