Deworming experience from start to finish.

Well said Cafarmgirl. It isnt anyones business what products are purchased by the buyer. Most vets know nothing about birds. Dogs and cats are their bread and butter. Worming is very simple, as are administering antibiotics and other meds to chickens. Raising chickens isnt rocket science unless one makes it out to be very complex. Seems common sense has disappeared around here.
I presume you're referring to me ...

No trouble at all getting what I want.  It's not for anyone at the feed store to question me as to what I am going to use that bottle of Valbazen or Safeguard for and honestly, around here anyway, I can't imagine them even raising an eyebrow if I did say it was for my chickens.

However, I can understand employee's not being allowed to make suggestions to someone regarding the off label use of any product.  Imagine if they were wrong, told you a wrong dose, etc. etc.   Has nothing to do with you needing anyone's permission to use that product on your chickens, that is your choice.  It's about store liability.   So, you talk to other people who have been-there-done-that to see what works, or talk to a vet about products and doses, if you can find one who knows about chickens.  Dewormers are not rocket science and most of them have a very wide margine of safety while being very effective, it just takes a little research at first to know what to use and when.   Nothing to stress about!  :)

The TSC by me has told me to treat blackhead with Tylan, and I know for a fact that is wrong! So I guess it just depends on what store you go to.

Oh I totally agree, I've been told some crazy stuff by TSC and other feed store employee's. When we had an outbreak of infectious bronchitis a year ago I was at the feedstore getting a new bulb for a heat lamp and got into a conversation with the woman at the register who suggested I treat the flock with DE as a means of curing the IB! They were already being treated by a vet and at that point I knew what I was dealing with but I found that a very curious suggestion lol!

I'm new to the chicken thing and have found this thread, and many others, to be very helpful. I'm very grateful that BYCers are willing to share information and experience.
I agree that this forum is a great place to get info and learn stuff. All of us were new to chickens at one point or another. You just kind of have to weed through all the info with the idea that if it sounds too complicated and out in left field then it probably is and there is probably a better/easier way.

Playin' devil's advocate, as perhaps the devil himself in this case, 'cause I'm rarely satisfied 'til I've dug deeply enough to hit solid stone. And, yes, it often get very complicated (and I tend to over-complicate even the simplest things, which only complicates everything all the more ~'-)

But, I prefer not to ever build anything upon sand.

If your goal is to find the better way? Then somebody's gotta put in the time/effort req'd to determine just exactly what that is. But, if it's the easier way you're hopin' to find? Then, just click that first link on google, and do whatever it tells ya to.

There is, indeed, most often "a better/easier way" to be found, but it didn't get there all on it's own: Somebody had to put it right there, where it was. That 'somebody' could be you ...

Oh, if only I could be satisfied with the first, second, third or even fourth google, backyard chicken or any other link! I often spend hours researching the simplest questions and mostly just confusing myself... "Where did I find the information that said...." "What was that other reference..." "Who said.... what is their background???? ahhhhhhhh...... It only gets better when I start seeing actual studies posted... thanks Dawg, cowcreekgeek, and a few others. That is when the information fog begins to clear up.

I do have a question, is there a way to mark a post or something said in a post that you want to reverence later? I am fairly new to forums.

Most of all, thanks for all of you, I really don't know what I would do without BYC, what a wonderful resource!

Exactly where too many of my days have gone here lately ... you've explained well the scenario, but w/ me? One thing leads to another, that raises new questions to answer, which just spirals.

You're certainly welcome to any sense you can make of my 'too many words' on here, and indeed, I've found many of my answers right here on BYC, from dawg, casportpony, PeepsCA, beekissed, speckledhen, janinepeters ... shouldn't even name names, 'cause there's just *way* too many ~'-)

And, on marking a post for later reference? There *so* oughta be, but you can right-click the link on the top-right corner of any post, and add it to your browser's bookmarks, which could be arranged in organized folders under one for BYC, for better organization.

It wouldn't be difficult to add right-click functionality, and personal bookmarking, and cross-thread quoting, rather than relying upon my scattered brain and the 'cut 'n paste' method to make my responses more clear/concise (sure everybody'd love to see that, most esp. when it come to my posts ~'-)
