I thought they were solitary hunters? I don't really know anything about them...

They usually travel in packs but they like to trick dogs by some of the pack hiding and one coyote luring the dog to them , then they gang up on it. They run as soon as they see a human though, they've tried to do this to my dog a couple times. They are really more of scavengers though and want easy pickings from what I've seen of the ones around here.

If by pack you mean 2-3 yes , it is uncommon but not rare to see 5-10 in a hunting pack in late winter here. They are not above scrounging up grub where ever they find it. I just did a job where they were actually eating garbage out of a Dumpster.

Dogs in numbers are not safe from yotes. There are actually guys the use dogs as decoys to lure in yotes for a closer shot. My brothers two labs were bit up bad this yr while they were out duck hunting. In CA they have foolishly banned the only effective method of controlling their numbers (foothold traps and snares) so they are having problems with people being bit by sick critters. Thats the sort of things that happen when wildlife is "stockpiled" they get over populated sick and in turn humans are put at risk.

The next toy you need on the road to become a Predator of predators is a remote Foxpro caller! a squirrel tail or piece of rabbit pelt on a stick to go in the tuft of grass with the hidden caller . Some camo cover alls and face mask. U always want to set up so that when they try and swing down wind they have to come into a clearly for the shot ..... they almost ALWAYS try and get down wind unless they are border line starving or really bold.

A rifle and scope that can do this doesnt hurt either.

Depends on the location and food availability in the area. Ive found they usually live in family units.

mom and pop - pups thru to the next spring then yearlings are kicked.

mated pair

or
sibling groups are also common for young coyotes who have yet to feel their oats.

Atleast in the residential areas around here this seems to be their most common.

I cant imagine why somone would say they dont pack up. They are canine! A pack will only be as large as their range and food source will support tho.

Check out the news in Colorado if you think they won't attack you. Broomfield, Co. has had more than one.
 
In some areas and in some cases, their behaviour changes if they cross breed with domestic dogs, which they will on occasion. It's not common, and the coyote temperment is always dominant, but it affects things. Since there are so many domestic breeds with so many different personalities and behaviour tendencies in domestic breeds, this causes real differences in how they act. Not at all a good thing.
 
We have 2 coyote clans that have taken up residence on the hills behind and in front of our house. In the warmer weather we hear them calling to each other. I think there is a messenger between them as he travels up our driveway, in front of DH's shop and out through the field behind our house. I've never seen more than 2 together but we can hear many. The messenger has figured out that our dog can't get near to the fence behind our house (invisible fencing). Our dog insisted on a confrontation one day but the coyote just went back to the fence line and made his way around our dog, he didn't want the confrontation.

Coyotes that breed with domestic dogs will have offspring that are sterile, coydogs. We have those around too.
