Am I the only one who had never heard this abbreviation until these boards? And, like me, are you slightly annoyed at the rather trite nature of it? Seriously, people can't really talk this way. I'm sending burning mental death rays at the next person who puts it in a subject line!

I think we're all sarcastic enough that DH pretty much amuses us. Sometimes they ARE dear, but not consistently. Someone suggested it really stood for 'dratted husband' (actually another word was suggested but zapped by the moderators).

When typing, abbreviations are common. We abbreviate BO for Buff Orpingtons, SLW for Silver Laced Wyandotte, etc. It's not really "trite" it's just easier.

No, I don't think people really talk that way, but I don't say "Gee, I'd love to have some BO" either.

IMHO you can always skip over those threads.

I hear what you are saying Grey. While I can't control the attitude others have while they abbreviate, I can certainly control mine. My husband is not perfect, but you all would be the last to hear about any details. I respect my husband, and will not share any dirty laundry or slander him. I love the guy, it makes it harder to love him when my thoughts are negative all the time. Just my $2 worth (inflation, plus, is there a cents key? Can't find it...lol)

DH is just a time saving device that, once known, serves its purpose well. Obviously, in "real speak" we don't go around referring to our husbands as "dear husbands" all day long, but, as someone else helpfully pointed out, we also don't refer to our Rhode Island Reds as RIRs either. If we simply relied on "H" as an abbreviation, it would not be easy to follow. As a result, DH, DS, DD, and DW are all used commonly and understood.

These are pretty much net-wide abbreviations. I've seen DH and DD, MIL, etc used since the early 90s when I first started using Yahoo Groups. It's not just this forum. When you chat/forum/group email a lot, you just get used to using the abbreviations and don't think anything of it.

Some are pretty universal, like IMO, DH, IMHO, etc.

Some are BYC specific: BYC, BO, BR, IBW.....

Oh, an there isn't a 'cents' key anymore - last one of those I saw on a keyboard was on an old timey typewriter.

The HTML code for 'cents' is '& #162 ;' WITHOUT the spaces. When you type in all run together it appears like this: ¢

I seriously spend tons of time on the internet! I work from a home office. In my spare time I farm and I'm a BETA tester on many video games. I go to a LOT of messageboards! Lots! Tons!!

But I had never seen it until now. I figured maybe it was a southern thing; then hoped that they would not rise again. If not trite, at least irksome.
