I am fairly educated about drawing blood and testing for pullorum in chickens/turkeys, all the bigger birds. But I was wondering about quail, as they are so small!

Should I go for the brachial, (wing) jugular (neck), or medial metatarsal (leg) vein for quail? Pro's and con's to both, but I do the wing with big 'uns. (It's easiest!)

Oh, I am using 5/8" 25 gauge needles, 3cc syringes. (I won't draw more than 1 or 1/2cc, 1% of body weight)

Thanks!

I just went through the training class the commonwealth of VA puts on, they suggested the wing but they also suggested the tool that MM sells for testing. The antigen kits they brought us had a smallish needle with them the demonstration I saw was more of scratching/pricking the wing vein rather then puncturing it. they did not mention any differences between LF and game birds I am getting around to doing mine once I finish sorting breeders from the freezer camp guys

If you only need a drop or 2 of blood, then just trim a toenail to the quick. They will grow a new one while you are testing for pullorium. A disease, they only get, when one houses/raises them with nasty evil, germ ridden CHICKENS!

Just something to think about. I don't give medical advice, because I'm not a Vet.....Well, I'm a Veteran, not a Veterinarian. If you have pullorium in your game bird stock...The sea of bodies will be your first clue. Searching for a vein, will be secondary.

When I draw blood, it's usually a prick in the vein on the wing. The smallest gauge you got too. Vet school gets to me at times.. (Maybe I should go back LOL)

I have got to have enough to make it over to the test plate, or put it into vials for blood testing if it ever needs to be done. (Let's hope not!
