You really are okay with the lower temps. While they aren't desirable, I am on day 20. Only 2 didn't make it, and they had blood rings. Nothing to do with my low temps. Low temps just means that I have to wait longer for chicks. Sally (and others) do say that they could be deformed. I don't think that is a big concern for you, though. Get the temps right. You will be fine.Grumble Grumble....I'm having a hard time with my bator temp, and while I think I have it figured out I'm still concerned about my hatch. I had the temps sitting pretty for two days before I put those eggs in. Then we had a random freezing spell and of courses heat is broken. My house temp was about 65. I sat the eggs IN the incubator with the lid propped open for about 6 hours to reach 75 degrees. Then closed the lid. It took FOREVER to warm up to 99.5. 4 times over the last 36 hours I have seen 98 or once a 97 in there.
Right now it is warming back up after I turned.
But it had been 99.5-99.9 for 12 hours prior.
I'm only on day 2... at 48ish hours...am I screwed?
And can somebody explain the wafer thermostat to me? Should I expect to be able to place the turn handle thing at the same position (that I marked) that gave me wonderfully consistent temps last time and have the same temp this time? Or should I have to fiddle with it again?
Oh gosh I hope there's hope for them... Everybody in the house is excited for a new Silkie. Grrrrrr. Stupid weather.![]()

I remember a big fight that wouldn't die about a year ago in a thread. The person typed 2Tb instead of tsp. People were attacking her a week later. I know what I use. If more works for someone, great. If less works, great. I am SOOO glad everyone here seems to respect that!![]()
My opinion is to buy him a Harley. In my world, that is known as a 1%.Have you ever met a truly evil 4 day old chick?? I hadn't until now, and am at wits end! The chick that hatched 2 days earlier than everyone else started horribly biting the others eyes and beaks the minute I put it with the younger ones, so I put it in a basket with them, but separate. It is an escape artist, and got back with them 3 different times. Then I thought it needs a red light to calm itself down, NOPE, didn't work. So, I put it in the basement with the 3 week old D'anvers to teach it a lesson. They got along. I left it down there for a day, and overnight, then tried to reintroduce. The others were stronger by then and fought back almost ganging up on it, which was quite funny given the circumstances, but within 1 hour hell chick had them all backed into a corner again. So, I put it back in the basement with the D'anvers. Problem: it is a Brahma Mix (both parents are extremely sweet, BTW) It can't live with the D'anvers for long. I am actually considering culling this chick based on the fact that if it's this nasty, this young (has bitten me already) I'm thinking it's an indicator of the future. Opinions?I do see culling.![]()
