Quote: You'll have to fix the hen, not the eggs :) Nutrient deficiencies in the hen's diet causes her to lay eggs that is not 100% hatchable. And different nutrients have different effects on the embryo development. I posted a list of it here awhile ago. It takes 10 days for an egg yolk to form and mature, so if there is a shortage of some nutrient in the hen's diet, I'd say sort that out and wait at least 10 days before incubating her eggs again. It also depends on the severity of the shortage.

Ok nevermind crisis avoided! I moved Cappas chicks an eggs over to an artificial nest in the Little Coop and replenished it with fresh food, water, and bedding and Cappa moved over there and sat on the eggs and now everything's fine

the eggs were only left out for about 10 to 15 mins I believe.

oh yea and anyone know ring neck and diamond doves? mother in law says they are "mommy" fed but I set some of those eggs under my broody banty cochin to see what happens....chicken mom hatching doves...Oz where's that straight jacket?
They eat partly digested food directly from the mom's crop. Kinda gross, but anyway. If they hatch post down in the Doves section for advice. I've raised some baby doves, but mine were not newborn, they were half-grown way by the time I got them.

Day 21 - have 4 hatched and a couple more pips, I am satisfied so far with my first time with shipped eggs. Question: When do I shut off my incubator, how many days do I wait? I want to give them every chance to hatch. Getting ready to set another incubator full and have my other going into lock down tomorrow.

I must say I am enjoying this although it's a little stressful during lockdown..

Congrats on the hatch! Give them until day 24 at least and check any unhatched eggs for signs of life before discarding them. Candle and check for internal pips and hold the eggs against your ear and tap them.

Wow.. I haven't posted in a week. I've been very busy with my summer job. 12 hours a day.. but at least I'm making some good money to go towards college.

Lots has happened, but I won't list everything.

2 chicks hatched last night and they were the only 2 eggs of that batch so it was a success.

I set a wood duck egg yesterday. A friend called me saying that her sister brought home a wild "goose" egg and the family was freaking out about it. So I drove over there just to find out that it was a wood duck egg and they asked me to please save it. I'm pretty sure that it's illegal to do so, but I threw it in the incubator so we'll see what happens. The egg hadn't started developing yet and it appears to be fairly old.

I also have some new baby birds. Yesterday, I was babysitting a little girl. Her brother was collecting fire wood when one of his friends saw 2 baby birds drop from a tree branch that they had hauled back from the woods. He yelled to get the ax to kill them, and the little girl that I was watching starting crying hysterically. So I ended up running over to stop them and grab the baby birds as well as the others in the nest. They are in a box in Gooser's pen and I was able to get them to eat a bit of egg yolk last night, but I really don't know what to do with them. There are 5 of them total.

Hello Cochins

Always good to see you! You mean chickens and goslings aren't enough. You want to raise wild birds now as well? LOL Good luck with them!

That's right! I'm always expanding.

But seriously, these birds are driving me nuts! I feel so bad for them and I have no idea how to care for them. I think the right decision may be to cull them because I cannot feed them every half an hour, but I'd rather give them a chance. I've been trying to feed them a hard boiled egg yolk mashed with chick starter and a bit of water. I'll drive to town sometime today in an attempt to find meal worms for them.
