are you giving probotics or adding ACV with mother?OK, sorry for not catching up on posts but I am concerned about the chicks. I had always been told that if they are noisy something is wrong - usually they are cold. Its 88 in the house. Its 95 at the heat lamp end of the brooder. All but 2 or 3 chicks were smashed up against the wall at the other end of the brooder like they were trying to get away from the light or the heat. I put a little cloth over the heat lamp end in case the light was bothering/scaring them. But they still don't want very near it. I put a little box in for them to snuggle up in if they wanted and no one has. There are still lots of chirps coming from over there. I think it is the same 3 chicks that seem to always be chirping. 2 salmon faverolles and a mystery marans. Is something wrong do you think, or are they just chatty/freaked out from their long day? Also I was trying to see if there was anything wrong with them (2 others had pasty butt when they arrived but seem fine since I took care of that) and the first thing I noticed was OMG their crops are huge and hard - but then I compared to the others and they are all like that - so I am guessing that is normal at this stage??
ETA: I just rechecked one of the 2 that had pasty butt, and it had poop and stuff actually stuck not to its vent but to its navel. The vent actually protrudes slightly and see some redness from the inside. But while holding it, it shot a perfect load of poop onto me so apparently its working. I tried wiping but there was too much gunk, I tried dipping in a warm bath - too much gunk, finally used warm water and the sink sprayer and got it all off. Then wrapped it in a washcloth and set it on my chest to dry while I held both hands around it for warmth. Seems to be doing ok, so I put it back in the brooder.
Good to knowoz I just asked an old farmer friend of mine about humidity, they used to hatch a lot of chicks she said they always kept all the bags of LIME for the fields in the bator room because they suck out the humidity much better than anything else, even a humidifier ????????
