Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

If you have room to lay the good ones I would mark them and lay them, only keep the unstable ones upright. I swear by the handturning in the sideways position, I have my best hatches roling side to side, I think it makes the embryo stronger. IDK but I only keep loose in carton the rest I lay and typically they hatch if they are viable after day 7!

Hey all, sorry I'm so quiet. Dealing with all sorts of nonsense here and now power failures to boot. It was off from 07:00am to 8:30pm yesterday and went off again today at 06:00am

I had a chick hatch in the incubator at 05:00am after getting down to freezing temps yesterday and I have it tucked under my shirt and jacket now, keeping it warm while we're waiting for the power to come back on.

Thanks, Sally. The power is still on and off and on and off... Heaven knows what they did to it yesterday and it was supposed to a routine maintenance job. Don't fix what isn't broken? I want to unplug the incubator, but the last egg pipped. If this carries on I'm going to wait for the broodies to go to bed with their chicks and slip the egg under one of them. On the bright side, if this chick hatches it will be 100% hatch, combine broody+incubator effort lol.

The last egg hatched this morning! 100% hatch!

What's amazing about this is we had no electricity all of Sunday and eventually most of yesterday. It got ice cold more than once. They also got (accidentally) soaked under the broody when we had a thunderstorm about 2 weeks ago and the coop leaked... When the power went out for the 50th time yesterday evening I unplugged the incubator, slipped the egg under a sleeping broody and

. I woke up at 05:00am and thought crap, the egg! Went out and got the egg (ice cold), slipped it in the incubator and 1.5 hours later it hatched

.

And then things got interesting... the coop door jams sometimes and today was one of those times. Me being half asleep and worried about the chick didn't make sure it was shut properly and OF COURSE it wasn't. I realised that when I hear frantic cheeping and found the cat in the kitchen with a chick in her mouth. I gave chase and caught her in the dining room finally. The chick is fine, thank goodness, but when I got up I could barely walk, I banged my knee going down to grab the cat. But the chick is fine and back with the Moms, #13 is doing great after all the drama with the power outs and the cat forgave me for grabbing her by the tail, so all is good and I swear I'm not hatching another egg for the foreseeable future!

I woke up yesterday with double vision and freaked out. I went to my doctor who ordered an MRI (as if I could afford one). So I went to the ER and the ER doc ordered a cranial CT. I looked at the images (My dad's an MRI tech and I used to help him when he was a CT tech and I had to go to work with him so I'm acutally pretty good at reading CT's and MRI's and Ultrasounds) and I didn't see any tumors but what I did see was a raging sinus infection that I didn't even know I had. I just put myself in debt for an ER visit and a CT scan for a sinus infection.

On a brighter note, I have quite a few eggs going into lockdown today. Wonky air cells but I think they'll be okay. I've gotten to be quite the expert at the assisted hatch thanks to miss Sunshine

. Three of them are from my very own turkey eggs (midget whites). Very excited. I don't know why I get so excited about hatching turkeys, I just do.

Sally, could you give me that link to the really good tutorial thing about hatching turkey eggs? I can't find it.

Congrats on the hatch! I've had a few hatch during long power outages before. It's amazing what they can survive.

One of my eggs last year survived being at room temperature for 3 days.

I hope your knee feels better.

I had horrible headaches and migraines daily for 2 months straight. When we went in, they ordered a MRI. The results of that MRI was a chronic sinus infection.

I didn't have any of the other symptoms of a sinus infection, but apparently that was the cause of my headaches.
