Hey everyone

Just want to say I love this thread and really appreciate all of the information! I just received some shipped eggs and about 12 appear to have detached air cells, so I'm about to embark on a hatching adventure as well

Would love your opinion on turning, I know it was recommended to leave the eggs in the carton so they remain upright and do not turn more than 45 degrees, what do you think about using an automatic turner? I've got them sitting and plan to leave them for a full 24hrs before putting in the bator, but trying to decide if I should go ahead and use the automatic turner, or remove it and put the carton in instead...thoughts?

I left mine to sit for 24 hours, then put them in the incubator and started the automatic turner (mine keeps the eggs upright). I had a couple of detached air cells (3) one never developed (had bubbles too so probably ruptured), one developed until sometime around day 7 and then quit, and the last one seems to be okay and lockdown is tomorrow. I am going to hatch in egg cartons to keep the egg upright and the detached air cell in the right place. Once I knew there was a detached air cell, when I candled, I always kept the egg upright so the air cell would stay in the right place and if I moved it I made sure to keep it upright.

I have a lot of shipped eggs that have saddle shaped air sacs, and I think they were loose air sacs and that they reattached on both sides because of the turner. At least that's what makes sense in my head when I look at them. I have heard about people not turning them initially for up to 7 to 10 days but that worried me, I was afraid the chicks would stick to the egg. I think if I get DACs again I will try to do something different with each one and see if anything works. Of course so many other things can go wrong, but if the air cell reattached that would at least tell me something. Also from what I've read on this site if it was loose or detached there was hope, if there were bubbles and it was ruptured, there was no hope for that one.

Sorry to hear about the eggs!! how many and what did you order? The next time I get them like this I will settle for 24 in the carton with bottoms cut out, no turning and then gently set in bator and no turn for 4 days! I only did 52 hrs no turn and I wish I would have done the longer. If you read the first post I show how I turn, and I am still turning. not really turning just laying over to the other side.. I have pics posted... I dont have an auto turner but some of the others do, I actually messaged a few people that I found reading through threads and what they said made sense so I asked their opinion. Most say upright entire bation and I am doing it. My eggs were so scrambled, those air cells were rolling bubbly and uggg a mess!!! I am amazed that I have one alive!!! So it can be done!!! I hope you have alot others set, that was my mistake for my first hatch I should have set more than 12! Best of luck with those little guys! I had so much joy when I saw that little one moving!! OMG I still do!!! AWESOMENESS!!!

Hey Overo. I just read on another thread that a lady who sets shipped eggs all the time said that every day that those eggs get older they are more compromised in viability, so she doesn't even let them sit out. She puts them straight into the bator and does not turn for about 5 days then starts turning normally. Loads of the experienced people in this area say it makes little difference letting them sit for 24 hours before incubating. What eggs you got?

I read this a bunch of times as well, about setting right away. So many decisions and opinions you know it!

Exciting.... but also you should see if you can find someone with another baby that will be really close to this ones age so it wont be alone. They really need contact with other chicks and you think you wont have any but this one
I dont mean get one yet... i mean line somebody up now .What day are you on.?
Also I really like your notes and graphs .Nice.
Later you will be so happy to have something to look back what happened on this hatch or that.Wish I had done that myself.!!Should start now guess its not to too late.Day 11.

Put my 4 amd 5 week old chicks out in the new coop for their first night out. WAAAHHHH
Worried it will be too cold. They all have their feathers though
Going down to 60 here.
Wish i had put a hole for a light bulb in the coop Guess i still could tomorrow. Going in the 50s later in the week for lows.!!!They are use to higher temps.... like 80.They peeped a while but got quiet once it got dark Arent use to dark either .Had to leave the lights on in the bathroom where thye were for the other younger chicks heat.

Thanks for all the input! The aircells don't appear to be scrambled, just a tad larger than I thought they should be and were moving all around when I candled them...perhaps I will give them til tomorrow noon and put them in rather than waiting the whole 24hrs. If I don't turn them in the bator it'l probably allow them the same opportunity to reattach, no? I've got 14 BLR Wyandottes, and it seems about 10 are detached ( I did think it was 12 of the 14 at first but two I'm not sure now, since I can't see the sacs that distinctly so maybe those two are scrambled, come to think of it...the 10 I'm certain are detached but intact. Luckily I've got another full bator I set last week and 15 more eggs that were to go in this set that are in great shape (yes, quite the addiction I've got going, lol).

I've been thinking a lot about the whole chick getting stuck thing, and maybe I'll try not moving them for as long as the embryo stays relatively small inside the egg, then once it gets to start filling out the egg, when maybe the risk of stuck chick is more significant, I'll start turning? Does anyone have a strong feeling about what day that might be? This is assuming they get that far of course, fingers crossed!
