Thank you Ozexpat, I found a hygrometer at the petshop and I've just put in the bator. The humidity in the room is 70%. Crazy. I'm going to check on the incubator humidity in a minute. If it's low enough I'll set the eggs.

DH asked the lady at the petshop if she's interested in selling chicks... She is!!

She said she'll take some when they are 6 weeks old and don't need the heat so much anymore. I'm going to get some more hatching eggs and hatch them and take them to her when they are fully feathered, just 6 chicks for starters, then we'll see how it goes. Hopefully they will sell well.

I'm going to see what hatching eggs I can get from the guy I bought my chickens from, so I don't need to keep breeding pairs. He's got quite a few different breeds and he sells eggs as well as chickens.
This is GREAT news! The hygro yes too! LOL

I am NOT a sales person, HOWEVER, did you mention that cute little chicks are freaking adorable and will sell much better than scrubby chicks at 6 weeks? perhaps you need to explain this when you visit her and show her your first few peeps!!! SERIOUSLY I am not kidding on this one.
but will add a smile

Hey guys, the actor is holding temp well after we adjusted it last night, it's spot on 37.5*C (99*F). Only problem here is I have NO IDEA what the humidity in there is???? No hygrometer! I'm going to buy one later and set the eggs as soon as I got that sorted. The instructions said to put so much water in there, but our house is a fish tank, so I don't know... rather play it safe and monitor the humidity. I don't want to mess this hatch up. The eggs are fresh, they can wait a bit longer. Will update later...

And talking about the house... It's raining in the kitchen. IN the kitchen. We can't figure out where the water is coming in and this is not going to help the mold situation. (The kitchen wall is grey) I'm looking at other houses to rent in the area. We can't live like this!!!

And besides I need more space for the chickens.

Wow! I totally missed the 'raining in the kitchen' part first read through. I don't know about Ireland but most states in the US would put that landlord in a crap load of trouble for renting a place with mold and Kitchen Rain! Good grief! Hope you find a better place ASAP!

Hummm... Question, how high up do I cut the egg cartons for lockdown? I cut just the bottoms off but I don't think that gives the eggs much room to move, if any, and I remember someone saying they need some wiggle room.
you may need to also cut some top off, I was thinking the other day too, I purchased those plasit egg trays from ebay, cheap a buck or two and will cut them into smaller sizes so if I only want to keep 4 upright I can or 6 or 12 or whatever..... I did cut it to fit in the bator, but I had too many eggs shoved in there last time.....

Quail eggs are stumping me, since the feeling in my hands isnt the best for such tiny things.... Finally figured out EXACTLY what they remind me of..... AND DONT FREAK BUT its true!!!....

Bloated ticks!!! thats what they look like!!! even have a sorta weird greentype tint!!! eeeeeeewwwwww

Sally, if you're trying to put us off quail... it's not going to work!

Our landlord dropped in for some eggs and I showed him the mess in the kitchen from the rain. He's going to look into getting it fixed a.s.a.p. Don't know about the mold though

We're cleaning it up, but it comes back.

Sally: she doesn't want chicks that still needs heat etc. 6 Weeks old is more manageable for most people. I don't mind at all. I get to keep them while they are cute and small

I'm thinking what breeds would work best for this. Am thinking RIR, Leghorns... Maybe I'll get some more Hyline eggs. Good backyard egg producers.

Sumi you finally get to join the madness again. sorry about the rain showers in the kitchen. Mold is nasty.

I never tire of watching little egglets hatch. 2 out and 14 to go.

Yay! Go chicks! Hope the others hatch well for you.

I haven't hatched chicks in an incubator since 2011. I'm happy to be back in business LOL I've set my 6 eggs early afternoon, our time. Just fine tuning the temperature now. Humidity's good. I've already checked on the incubator 15 times. This is going to be a long 3 weeks! I can't wait for the first candle... I wonder how fertile those eggs are.

Guess what DH did? He saw mealworms at the petshop and we bought some live ones. He came home, went online and read about mealworm farming and where to get them in Ireland. They are farmed in the UK. So he went back to the petshop and asked them how many they sell in a week (about 4 pounds) and how much they pay for them. He's going to start a mealworm farm and supply them. The owner of the petshop said she'll happily buy from "someone local" instead of importing them. Yay!

LOL wasnt my intention, just sharing an observation! LOL I will never look at them the same again!! SO THEY BETTER FREAKIN HATCH AINT!!!

I understand, but what is a lamp? LOL just saying she may not realize she can sell alot more as peeps! Even the best of breeds are horrible looking in between feathers lol

Quote: AWESOME!!! just dont fail at it like we did KEEP THE LID OFF THEM!!

our humidity was too high in the house during summer, they got mold in there, mold NOT good for chickens and peepers....

Sumi you neeeed to keep looking, I bet behind those walls its black with mold and will always come back out no matter what you do!!!!

Harmony got the meal worm starter kid last week I won in the NYD hatchalong, she sent mealys worms eggs pupa all stages!!! so this time they are on the counter without a lid! lol

I know, I'm just teasing you

I didn't know the ticks in the US are that big!

I think she doesn't want the hassle of caring for the little ones and selling them to people who doesn't know etc. Up to 2 weeks they are fairly high maintenance too and she's going to sell them to impulse buyers who are probably not going to have a brooder and heat lamp ready. I don't mind raising them until they are stronger. They are still cute at 6 weeks. I'm already thinking of another possibility with this venture. If people buy chickens they are going to need to put them in something... and the nearest place that sells coops are 1. blooming expensive and 2. quite a distance from here...
