Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

I asked this in a seperate thread, but it's not getting any answers so I'll ask here.  It's more active :D

How many eggs should I incubate with the intention of getting 8 chickens? (7 chickens, one rooster) My eggs will need to be shipped, and so I'll expect at least a 50% mortality rate there.  That makes 16.  THEN I have to account for the 50% likelyhood of getting roosters instead of hens, so 32 eggs.  32 eggs for 8 keepers seems high.  What say y'all?

I would say your math sounds about right bit I would round up a few. Better to hatch a few too many and sell the spares on CL than too few and be trying to hunt for chicks on CL. But then again, I am a bit chick crazy... :p

I have a hen that was in the nest box, sounds congested??????

Tylan 50, .5 cc x5days oral or x3days injection.... ANYONE second this? What happened to MarineCORPfarmer??? ugggg

Here's some photos!
This is the box I used

I lined it with that silver insulation stuff, and taped all the edges with foil tape

Here's most of what I used inside

My hubby wired up the socket for me. He put it in a plastic light box. I wired up the fan. The thermostat isn't shown, but we used a water heater one.

Here it is with everything inside (taped down at the moment, I'll be using screws and making it permanent today)

I drilled two one inch holes along the bottom on the light side and at the top on the egg side. I'll be adding a tube for adding water, and I'm considering rigging up a turning knob to the outside. I'm also going to drill a small hole for the temperature adjusting knob on the thermostat. It faces the wall, so why not :)

I'm also going to put together a page to go on the incubator page.

ETA: I haven't got the lid together just yet either. I'm going to use the slats from the box, cut a hole for glass, glue and nail the two pieces together, caulk in the glass, then attach it with hinges and a latch. I'm going to use some left over automotive door seal around the top to make it close tight.
Looks good

Enter the page. You never know, you may win! I See sally linked the contest for you, so do that and send us the link, so I can add it to my how-to-build-an-incubator list.

Quote: Spoiled brat LOL You're a good chicken mom! I don't actually know if the air sacs would be different, to be honest. I left my broodies alone with their eggs. I've never had a shrink wrapped chick under a broody. They don't get up once the chicks start hatching (well, most don't) and they put moisture on the eggs while they are sitting on them, too keep the humidity high enough. I want to stick a hygrometer under a broody one day. If she'll let me! If I do I'll let you know what the humidity is.
Good luck with the hatch!
