Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

I internally pipped the goose egg. I was able to avoid hitting any blood vessels, but it was close. From the tip of his beak to his notril is now clear. Any farther and I would have hit a large red vein. I can't get his beak any clearer so for now he just has the one nostril. I don't think he's breathing yet, but at least he has the access.

Any advice Sally? Should he begin breathing immediately or is it ok for him to wait.

ugggg sorry been one visitor after another today! gonna read this thread first! sorry cochins!!

Quote: his beak should be in a position such that you just have to "move" the membrane away from it, like a circle, push veins rather than cut
I've got tweezers, antibiotic sap, and Q tips by my side. Should I grab anything else?
I put rubbing alcohol in a little cup to keep the ends of the tweezers in so I can grab them and know they are clean during an assist
paper towels, corn starch
Oh and about bleeding out. Celtic Oaks gave me a huge warning about that. If I don't feel comfortable, then I'll wet the membrane and leave it be for a little while longer.

Sorry for all of the questions, but I have one more.

If something did go wrong, are there any household products that could be used to stop the bleeding? I've read about vinegar and sugar, would either of those be safe to use with a chick?
bleeding, I tried corn startch it works but gets chunky.... so if I cause any I hold a DRY paper towl on the little area for a minute and it stops. I started this on navels as well and after bleed stops add the antibacterial ointment
Gosling Update:

I took the top off, then I smeared antibiotic sab onto the membrane with a Q tip. I can see the baby perfectly, but those bloods vessels are really intimidating. He hasn't internally pipped yet and there was no brown spot on the membrane. The gosling is correctly positioned with it's beak near the air cell in the lower section. He's back in the incubator. I think I'll see if he pips himself first, because I don't want to hit those veins. There's a little bit of fluid left, but not much.
did you get a pic coch?
Quote: I use the clear thick gel in a tube, NOT with pain meds though and Qtips

Mine have always been breathing cochins, are you sure it was still alive? it moved?

Definitely alive. He moves around fairly well. It's just that I don't see his body moving up and down like I believe it would if he were breathing. Wouldn't it be obvious if he were breathing on his own? I'll try to get some pictures up in a bit. Thanks for all of your advice! I really hope the little guy makes it.

you can see yolk on the right one? then it must be malpositioned. are they all moving?
the one on the front left is the one you got the beak out? if you see red veins if even tiny let it go. I have found if there is ANY blood in those veins they still have yolk! so let it

Ok y'all... Most of my eggs look like this. Strong veins still showing. What do u think is the problem? Day 23 - applied ointment to membranes and place them back in incubator. Need a little walk through advice!
are they moving?
Quote: Agreed! as long as you are taking care of that membrane they should be ok, HOWEVER they could have orthopedic and neck issues after hatching, most of these can be fixed if you have time to put into them. NOT ALWAYS the case though!!

sterling I would continue to do what you did for the first one, you are the only one that knew what it looked like, when the others look like it did then do the same....

HOWEVER I dont suggest rushing them out of the shell, get them breathing and wait until tomorrow morning and see if their is any more blood.

I have found that it takes a good 24+ hrs for a chick to absorbe and acclimate AFTER the internal pip!

Quote: then she is breathing so far, let her be, your gooser baby may need WELL OVER hrs as she is! keep up the humidity if you have no other eggs in there up it to 80 now, she cant drown any longer.

I will pray she can make this important transition from embryo to sweetness for you cochins!!
