how can you tell they are gonna do it? do they do that sideways dance like they do to hens or do they just run and attack or what?
Wow this thread moves fast lol Little Red dances and puffs up at you before he attacks not sure on big boy he's never tried it with me . So sorry you lost Halo

they sure are wacky, typical wacky though!

so staggered all heading into lockdown together?, forgive me I cannot remember much : ( what day is everything due for lockdown?
so do you have an internal pip? and on which?
LOL he he he
Yes, sorry I have night class. This thread does move fast. The internal pip was on the egg I took a picture of. It's staggered and they were supposed to go into lockdown tomorrow and hatch day should be Friday. The ones in cartons are only on day 9

, set to hatch the following Friday. Should I attempt to turn them during lockdown until I get an external pip? Honestly if I get anything out of the second batch I will be shocked. They were over 10 days when I set them due to shipping problems. You can see where my bitterness towards shipping comes from. A bunch of malpositioned chicks and old eggs has been our first and only experience.

I really wanted Call Ducklings, and would have tried hatching them myself, but I read they are the hardest to hatch of the ducks. Their bill is tiny, so they often pip internally, and can't reach to zip. So, I placed an ad on Craigslist, and out of the few responses I got, picked a lady that I liked to set them for me. So,around the 13th I should have 4. Ray already collected pallets to start the duck hut! A friend brought the pond to church Sunday. It's starting to come together now!

ah well ...he waddles the other way now when we go into the pen.

Someone asked about my hatch rates. I have always flipped my eggs and I have had a couple 100% hatch rates. I understand that in nature, the eggs roll, but I wouldn't go as far as saying that flipping the eggs would ruin a hatch. The automatic egg turners flip eggs at a 45 degree angle, so what's the difference between that and the full 180 degrees? I always investigate why any embryo dies and I have never seen a torn membrane.

I don't want to start on argument.. I just want to share my opinions and experience.

and Cochins remember that we all have our "tricks" so share away no one should be upset because tell them how you incubate...it's all good information and we adapt and of course my favorite...EXPERIMENT!
