Said I'd pop in and join & Ta-Dah! here I am!!
Okay festivities aside.... I'm on Day 7 with 16 Welsummer eggs that I'm hatching my first time ever on a Brinsea. It's been a stressful start as I thought my Brinsea was a drop-it-in & forget-about-it kinda deal.... but on Day3 I had weird temp fluctuations from the 80s up to past 100..... talk about a rude awakening at 5:30a when the thermometer registered 83F and who knows how many hours it had been that low..... was so ready to chuck the eggs and return the $#^%$^% thing, but hubbs babysat the incubator and slowly made adjustments. I still dunno what went wrong.....
I tried candling last night (Day6) and its too darn dark (dark brown speckled eggs) to figure out what I'm looking at. But I am certain I see a blood spot or two.... Should I wait til Day 10 to recandle? I've weighed all the eggs last night, and of course have lost anywhere from 2-4 gm per egg. I don't think I'd feel bad about cracking open an egg or two and visually confirming that the chicks have had early deaths. It's still a learning process for me - I'd just feel bad if I did crack one open and it was still developing..... sheezh! Imagine the guilt!

Candle again on day 10. By that time you should be able to see who's developing and who's infertile etc. You usually can't see much before day 7 and even then it's sometimes hard to tell. By day 10 they are halfway through the incubation, so if they are not showing any sign of life by then... toss.

YAY!! Welcome!!! I can imagine the guilt, been there done that!!! Let them in and candle again!! Try laying the eggs on a dry cloth and adding two flashlights to candle.... see the hatching 101 article in my signature for candling suggestions.... Did you call the company? what in the world was with those flux??

3 degrees over night, No heat in coops, but all is well this morning.. They were extremely glad to see me with warm FF and warm water though! I even had a few eggs!! I pray this weather is over soon!!!
We're just starting to thaw out on this coast but it wasn't quite that cold. Yikes! Sending warm wishes!

Progress of our Shed conversion to breeder pens and grow out pens.... larger pics are in my profile in family and pets
We split the shed in half longwise with a simple 2x3 fram and that plastic chicken wire because its cheap.
We made two breeder pens and 2 stacked grow out pens, which dont have doors or chickens yet.
I wanted it this way so I had easy access to each pen without having to step in chicken poo to go from one into another pen, plus I have hanging storage and storage for straw and feed, etc.
All doors will be unframed on the bottom so I can simply sweep pens out the door and right onto a tarp I can pull into woods compost pile without having to load it all up. Simply cleaning was on my mind BIG time. each pen has an outlet on the ceiling as well as a reg light on timers.... grow outs will have red heat lamps.. for now the nov hatch brahma are residing in the second breeder pen until I get set up. Each pen has cement block for beak scratching, water dishes, and feed, and book shelves made into nesting bxs.... Need to get a roost up for the cochin, but they seem to like that broken skid so I left it for now....
