Yes only at lockdown....I found that most of my eggs are too huge for the egg carton for hatching in, just too tight and those pips are tiny at times! and then doing more research on commercial hatchery practices and hatching more shipped eggs I realized that when it comes to lockdown day 18 I never really have bad air cells anymore just awkward ones...

Love the cuties! And thanks for the baby gate idea! I was worrying about making a decent sized grow out brooder but that solves the issue nicely. I have two baby gates like that that can latch together to make one giant pen. It didn't even occurs to me until I saw this!

First egg from my first hatch....I'm a a little nuts right now! And I tend to over research and overthink things!!

Sally and sumi,
Just wondering how you hatch? Do you use cartons or just lay the eggs on their sides for lockdown and hatch?

I used cartons this time for the first time this last week and it seemed they pipped and zipped great but when they tried to push themselves out of the bottom 2/3 of the shell they ended up hanging over the shell! Any advice on this? I loved the fact that they didn't play soccer with each other like my previous hatches

I always lay then on their sides. It just seems more natural to me.

Coops are clean at least for a week or two! I found a few eggs hiding in the straw! stinkers!! frozen and gross into the woods they went!
My cochins eggs are already bigger than my layer pen so I will start setting them along with any silkie eggs I collect! So at least its starting slooooowwwwly!!

I wish I had known what I do now and I would not have a "layer pen" per say,
I would def do Pure Splash/blue Ameraucana Roo's and blue hens and adding a few maran hens or OE's and barredrocks
This would give me the ability to sell the eggies for pure A's and OE's for hatching! The barred are thrown in there for tan color and I LOVE my Rocks!

Thoughts on this combo????
