Okay, tonight is lock down with a still air LG bator. Make sure wells are tipped off, have a wet washcloth in there and leave it alone until hatching? My eggs are have been and are big end up in paper egg cartons. Do I need to raise the temp any? It's at 100.5.

Also when I candled last night, I saw movement but when I look at the little end I can still see into it. Shouldn't it be all filled w a chick? It's a light colored egg. Thanks!

i have had a few of those weird eggs on day 18 too, dont worry about it for now. sounds like you got a good plan! I have a fan unit and do the 99 for hatching. and 99.5-100 for incubating. So exciting!! We will put a bunch into lockdown wed, WOW is that tomorrow already!! oh boy I need to warm up the hatcher!! holy moly! that went fast!

also.... do you have loose air cells yet? if you dont I would lay them in the bator, and I always lay mine with the lower dip in the air cell up.

There is a section in the hatching 101 article about laying them down..... I dont want to overwhelm you with info, but I also know exactly where to find it in the article..... so here is a paste (geeeezzzz am I scared to share info now or what!)

See how that air cell is beginning to dip more to one side? This is a natural occurrence to help aid in the hatching process. If you lay the egg down on a flat surface it will roll itself into the correct position for hatching with the greatest part of the air cell up. I now mark the upward side of the egg so I know how it should remain for hatching. This is the best position for hatching so that the chick is able to turn into hatching position. See images below….

Day 18 laying horizontal for actual hatching helps a chick hatch 1-2 hours earlier.
The hatching position, with each egg lying on its side, is commonly accepted as the most conductive to efficient hatching, and the freedom of the egg to shift or roll at least to some slight degree appears to contribute to the ease and facility with which the chicks may fracture the shell by pecking to emerge from.

Questions.....
while ducks are in the house I dont need to add water and food if I let them out each morning right?
When will they begin laying eggs?
how do you know when a duck is broody?

Thanks chiccs
I have no idea about ducks laying eggs or broodiness. Both of our ducks are boys. They are brothers from different mothers.

Ducks are awesome foragers. I always give food and water in the evening and they will usually go in their pen and eat. Ducks don't go back in their pen at dusk like the chickens. They would stay out all night if I left them on their own. Lettuce is a favorite treat and I can tempt them in with it or I end up chasing them all around until I get crazy.

Your dark egg is fine. Hopefully it will have a nice big chick for you. You don't usually raise temp at lockdown and some people even lower it. I personally don't mess with it once it is set. I know it is different for a still air. I have hatched upright in the carton and it worked fine but it is better to lay them down where they have lots of room to move. Good luck.

. Without this site and all the great info so many of you supply I'm sure I'd still be murdering all my eggs . I'm sure I will be on today my polkie chick with a wonky air cell has pipped and I'll be worrying till he hatches trying my hardest to stay far away from the incubator lol

Oh no! Ducks don't go in at night? I was planning on letting them free range, but I sure don't want to have to catch them every night.

By the way, my ducklings are getting lots of feathers.

I can't wait until they're completely feathered out. Then I'll try moving them in with the chickens.
