sumi! gosh that avy threw me! lol at first I thought it was a mystical skull until I looked closer, no I am NOT wearing my glasses he he he
I took that pic in the tunnel on the Co Cork-Co Kerry border. There's a hole in the roof of the tunnel and water drips down there constantly. But on that day it was so cold up there that all the water in the tunnel froze. There was icicles all over the tunnel walls. It was horrendously cold in there, but it was magical...

psss dont try this at home!

THAT IS ONE BIG CHICKEN! Geez, he would come up to almost my waist!!!

He sure is pretty!

I have not been on in a couple days because I was so busy! Lots of things happened to me recently!

I got two more babies from a breeder on Monday!!! One barred rock and one white rock!!!!:

The white rock is named Maddy, and the barred rock has yet to be named. (ideas anyone?)

Maddy thinks the barred one is her momma hen. XD The barred one is three weeks old, and the white one is one week. The guy sells his chickens (usually when they get bigger), and I got his name and number from some guy at the farmer's market (
yesss.gif
) Right on the same day I called him, he sold us the chicks. He had about 100 of them! His chickens are pure bred and he shows them, and says I could probably show these two also! I need to go to a chicken show. That would be cool. He had a lot of bantams (not sure of the exact breeds, but they were hyper!) and some barred and white rocks, some silver laced wyandottes, white and brown leghorns, lots of ducks (some were ginormous!) and a couple of other breeds. I was going to get a wyandotte and barrred rock, but when I saw how calm and tame the untrained rocks were, I had to get two! I could pick them up and hold them without them squirming! They had to be the softest chickens ever. Can't wait for these buys to get older. (he said that if one (or both) happens to be a boy, he will trade with me for a hen. He is awesome!) I can't get any more chickens now.

Cute! I don't know if I should put them in with the other chicks yet. They smell like nasty barn (I saw in the barn and it looked clean though) I don't think they are diseased or sick, but I would really like to know what everyone thinks I should do. Should I keep quarantining the two?

I also have some other fantastic news- Hope laid me a perfect, tan, itty- bitty egg today! I candled it and it has a yolk and tiny air cell!

Hope's egg compared to a grocery store bought egg (it is a bit darker )
(it looks like the egg has the word "ROBOT" on it in pink XD)

I let Hope out of the closet for about 45 minutes to dust bathe in the sun in the living room as a reward. That is one happy chicken!

:O

Such a happy chicken photo. She was smiling! Her feathers would ruffle out and then settle and then ruffle out, and then she would dust bathe, move, and then repeat.

That is definitely a hen's tail. :D

Someone just told me the Hatching 101 Article was sticky! I said what do you mean sticky! OMG! not sticky!! I figured it out after some thought!:th So glad to help others :yesss:

I love leghorns. In England we don't have them everywhere like out there. We tend to have a Rhode /Rock Red mixed up breed that pretty much legs an egg a day! But leghorns are wicked!! I love them. I had 4 of them before I moved recently. And just building up my flock still. Also trying to find a bit of land near by so I can keep more. Just because I totally free range at home and hubby hates their poop!! Lol. I just about get away with the crowing but he can't stand their mess. I don't mind though! Lol. But she is defo a hen for sure! The Roos look a lot different! I can't wait to get more. Unfortunately ill have to hatch them though as I want chicks and they are hard to come by here!

Aww, I hope you get some! Hope is actually half leghorn, half production red. I am guessing that is why her egg is almost a pale brown. Her father was a white leghorn, and her mother was the production red. If it had been the other way around, she might have laid a brown egg! ...? Not positive about that though.

:frow  your very welcome!   I cant wait to see those Phoenix chicks, I love them even though I cant have them I adore them! and the chicks are so cute!  Hey do you have turners in your coolerbators?  Been thinking about adding, but worried about space issues since I jam pack that thing! I love it to! I swear if I don't open it there is absolutely no variance! its amazing after fiddling with the stupid styro I use as a hatcher now!

I'll definitely share. Got six eggs, praying to the hatching gods that they give me six chicks. :fl

No turners yet. I'm going to give these some hand turning just to see how that goes. I might stick a turner in there at some point and see how it does, will update here if/when I do. I need to get some pictures of the cooler to show how it's set up, since it's so much different from what I've seen anyone else do.

Nervous Nelly here!! Day 17 and I think I'm going to lockdown tonight after I mark the air cells so I put the right side up when I lay them down. I am thinking about doing this 12 hrs. early because of the Icelandic eggs in the bunch, which I read tend to hatch a day early. I have read the Hatching 101 over and over...worried about the humidity staying stable as I have had a heck of a time keeping it from fluctuating in the Hovabator. Wondering if, with one vent open, - the other is covered by the fan housing - and the little holes around the wafer mount, the water trenches are enough surface area? Or should I add a small dish under the wire?

Also worried that raising the humidity 12 hrs. early will drown the others? Or are we past that??

Umm, I am not sure, but I don't think it should hurt to go into lock down now, just don't raise the humidity too high. :) Good luck!
