Quote: Sounds wonderful! I want to turn my chicken hobby into more of a business, but do only rare breeds for selling chicks and hatching eggs and maybe breeding pairs. I'll see when I get going. In the meantime I'd love more land so I can get more laying hens to sell eggs. I sell quite a few eggs to the neighbours and our landlord and their relatives, but I want to expand. The available land round here is either not easily accessible or too far from our house.

Warning the following is very gross and graphic. If you are here to talk about shipped eggs this probably not the grossest thing you have ever seen but I do not recommend reading this post after you have just eaten…….

This chick has been in the process of hatching for 3 days now. Clearly there was something wrong with it. I will try to go step by step for anyone who has skipped ahead to read this. I hope the pictures will be helpful to anyone in a similar situation.

What went wrong..

1.) all other chicks hatched long before it.
2.) Internal pip had happened 36-48 hours before I made it a teeny breathing hole (external pip) on 4/6 at 1pm
3.) It made an erratic giant zip hole instead of zipping in a circular motion on 4/6 just a few hours later.
4.) We let it rest, and checked things out the next morning.
5.) Slowly we could tell this chick needed help.
6.) 4/7 was spent slowly peeling away the shell. By the end of the day we could see what looked like yolk but it was not easy to see. So it was placed in a cup to finish absorbing over night.
7.) Morning of 4/8, freed bird from shell. Cleaned it up and did as follows.

Here it is free from it's shell.. Lots of stuff still attached to it, no tears though

A bottom view of what I was dealing with.

I used a piece of thread coated in antibiotic ointment and manuvered the chick around so I could tie of its cord. At this point I could find it but it was not until the shell was removed and I cleaned around the area with a hydrogen peroxide Q-tip that I could see ANYTHING close to resembling a cord. I had to cut the rest of the ummm gunk? What is that stuff? I cut it off as close to my tie as I could. I probably should have done both closer to the body in hindsight.

Here it is now. You can see the body on the right side of the pic does not look correct. It's head is still misshapen and wing is more straight than bent like the other one. It's foot had been pinned in the shell so we will see if it straightens out over the course of the day.

This what the inside. VERY clean shell, but someone please tell me what all that gunk is?

Thank you everyone for walking me through this. Like I said I hope it helps someone else.

Good Morning Everyone! Good Lunchtime Sumi!

Sally, I am glad your two lil frozen babies are doing good! I worried about them and my own until at least midnight last night. No rest for the weary eh? They do make me feel better about working on my lil guy. Not so worried about it getting too cold under my heat lamp while working on it.

Sumi, we missed you so much last night. Not sure how much you read, but most everything went downhill around page 999- on to what felt like forever.

Here is stubborn chick this morning. Still chirping and would you believe I see less yolk? Either it is drying up or still absorbing...

Sorry that paper towel is right in the way of the yolk but if you look in between the leg and the towel you can still see some.

So I guess just let it rest some more today? How long does it usually take to absorb yolk?

Ok, I'm sorry, but I still think it's ruptured. See how the paper towel is tinted yellow? That happened with both of my "yolk" babies. Your baby is wet and sticky because it's covered in yolk.

Oh you did great! (I still need to catch up on reading)

I'm 95% sure the chick ruptured it's yolk sac. That's what it looks like. You tied it off beautifully and now you just need to keep it clean until the navel closes.

Once again, great job!

and the little chick has a really good chance at surviving.

Blah, I can't find any pics of black Barnevelder chicks, and I soooo want to know what they'll look like. I found one when I searched but it was identified as actually being a different breed.

do you have iodine/betadine to put on the navel? Well done, could you wipe the stinky gunk off of him?
