I had a bit of a mishap yesterday. The 30 eggs I have in are in a 30 egg cardboard flat. Sitting on a 1x2 for easy turning. Just have to tilt the carton to turn. Well I never set 30 eggs and they were to heavy. They looked like the St.Louis arch in there. So I have to pick them up and move them off center over the board. Well yesterday when I moved them the cardboard ripped and 4 fell on the wire. Hopefully when they fell they didn't bust any veins. So I got a 18 and a 1 dozen carton and was moving them to them when I picked up an egg and it broke.

What a mess. It got all over about 3 or 4 of my eggs. I wiped them off and put them back in. But on the good side, they were the same 3 or 4 that fell on the wire.

Well we will just have to see. Always something. Isn't it. So now 29 eggs.

I have watched the vid on making the cooler-bators a lot. Will make one sooner or later, looks pretty easy. But I think I will order a few of those plastic 30 egg cartons and use them next run. I hope there a bit more sturdy.

Well, I was just reminded this morning that, even if the chick in the egg is alive, sometimes they just aren't meant to hatch.

I helped my oopsie egg a little bit. I pulled back the membrane and discovered that this chick was badly badly deformed. It hat no eyes or upper beak. Just the lower beak, it's tongue, and a weird looking beak nub. The poor thing is out of it's misery now, and my incubator is empty and off.

I took pictures...but I don't think I'll post them. It was a little disturbing.

I have had to cull some too, that comes with assisting

OK that is all the catching up I can do. Must go make breakfast and I must be productive today. Lil stubborn chick is still giving me grief. Poor thing is still not walking after being in his cup all night with its feet tucked in. That leg is right back out. It needs to make some serious progress today or it might need to pass on to chick heaven.

momma I am not sure how far you want to go with him or how active he is. you could tape his feet in correct position in front of him and make that little swing for him so he still puts weight on his feet as therapy but he wont be able to move.... those links show the chair. I am a firm believe that physical therapy works, if you have the time to give he, me I am at the point where I DONT FEEL LIKE GIVING IT! it all depends on the spriteness of the chick and willingness and time of broody momma!

I just checked on the broodys ducky in my incubator put more bacitracin on the membrane and he made a peep at me! Hes squirming around more too. The air cell end is off, so should I keep him like I have laying down on the paper towels?

let her go! she will get out on her own now. just keep track of times

There is nothing more I love than packages in the mail. Alas, after the last month and the problems we have had with shipped eggs I think my husband would KILL me if he saw anymore eggs arrive. I managed to purchase 91 eggs and because of shipping problems (15 totally smashed and 36 that were lost at the PO for over 10 days), we only have 23 (including "stubborn not walking chick"). Now I fear that if I get anymore eggs they will be too spread out in age to learn to live together peacefully. My hope is that I can maybe keep my white Marans Roo and start an Olive Egger project next spring. Can you tell I am trying to think about anything but my lame chick right now! Haha!

Oh, and I am not sure if I have enough time but I am going to keep reading and try SOMETHING today. If it is not improved by the end of the week then I don't know what we will do. (see how we keep extending this chicks deadline for demise.... Hmmm)

I just put an ad on craigslist for my 9 chicks...I am afraid they are already outgrowing the brooder, so I must begin the search for their new homes. This makes me incredibly sad.

Where do you live? I always buy chicks off of craigslist. Maybe if you live close enough, I will buy them.

I'm having a really awful morning. I lost the problem chick last night. She wouldn't eat and I tried and tried, gave her some yolk last night to try and perk her up and she drank quite a bit and she looked better, but when I checked on her this morning she was gone. If that wasn't bad enough I went a put her brooder mate with the broody, all went well so I came back inside, had a coffee etc. Went back to check on them and found her stone cold and dead. I don't know what went wrong this time. I gave the broody 4 chicks that she adopted no problem, they are doing well. This one it seems didn't get that it needs to crawl under her to stay warm. She accepted it no problem. The chick just didn't know what to do... I feel so bad about that. I keep thinking I should've checked. I should've waited until it crawled under her to make sure... I should've tucked it under her myself. I should've, I didn't and now the chick's dead. 

And another of the bantams went broody. The last thing I need right now. She's got a few eggs under her, I don't know how many. I don't care at the moment. I'll just let her get on with it.
