Ok Sally, and any others wanting to see pics of my hatch, here they are. Sorry it took so long but i just now got done with my to do list for today. It's a little after 2:00 A.M. here and I just got inside, I hate having to feed animals by flash light. I spent all day in town running errands with my two kids, ages 1 and 3, and needless to say my nerves are shot. I don't know if anyone knows this but toddlers get a little fussy when you are taking them in and out of car seats every 15 minutes and dragging them into stores and offices where they aren't allowed to touch anything. After i got home I handed my children off to my poor wife who had to deal with the cranky little darlings while I started doing all my outside chores in the dark. But anyways here they are, I meant to post the pics before we left this morning but i completely forgot. I am now up to 8 turkeys, one didn't make it, seven ducks, two of those didn't make it as well. I have 4 guineas now, with the other two working there little tails off to break through that rock hard guinea shell (I swear those shells are made of granite or something), and I placed 8 chicken eggs under the broody hen and 6 in the incubator. 7 out of 8 under the broody made it, with one that wasn't ever fertilized. 4 out of 6 chicken eggs that were in the incubator made it to lock down, and all four seem to still be progressing but none have pipped yet. Everyone feel free to comment, especially if anyone has any advice on what colors the guineas, turkeys, or chicks might be. Some turkeys are a solid whitish yellow, and others are a greyish tan with either dark brown or reddish rust lines on their backs and heads. All of the guineas are kinda brown with grey and darker brown lines on their backs and necks. I know the pics aren't the best but i was in a hurry(as always) and it was raining outside when I was taking the pics of the games and cochins.
Here is a couple pics of the hatched group as of late last night, there are more now but my wife's camera is dead.
One of the Turkey's that I expect will be a Nargasette (not sure on the spelling?), Bourbon red, or some other variety with different coloring.
Two of the guinea keets, I believe they will be pearl but i'm not to sure on guinea coloring.
One of the Rouen ducklings. My wife and kids love the ducks!!!
Kinda hard to see but these are the cochin chicks that were hatched by the game hen. I would have tried for better pics, but this game hen is one mean mother. She has actually came out of the coop and tried to flog me while I was feeding and watering them.
And these are some game chicks i bought from a local woman, who has many different types of poultry, my son had a blast at her place when we went to pick these up. I'm not sure what colors these will be and neither did she because she took them in on a trade. I bought all 12 that she had for a dollar a piece, I don't know if anyone has ever seen the prices on game chickens but around here they are pretty pricey, going for 5 to 10 dollars a piece for day old chicks and upwards of 100 dollars for a trio of adults. I got these so cheap because she only wanted laying hens and as everyone knows games are better brooders than layers.
Thanks to everyone again for all the help and advice, I wouldn't have ever gotten here without all of your help. Thanks again!!!
Ok, I had to try to get some pics where you could see the coloring better on everything. These aren't great but you can see the colors on the turkeys and guineas slightly better.
Some of the turkeys. The person I bought the eggs from said some of the turkeys had the penciling gene. I'm not sure what i have though.
Everyone in my home's favorite, the ducklings!!!
Two of the guineas. Again I am clueless on what color they will be.
Group photos, everyone is playing nice so far but I will be setting up different brooders for everyone tomorrow.

Sumi said goosey pictures make her want to get geese too ... and i also agree it is time for more goosey pictures
and she suggested doug give the hen some of the incubator chicks to raise
doug said he was afraid the cat might get them
cody42 had a rough day of running errands with the toddlers ( mine are a little older but i remember those days and can sympathize!! )
cody has 8 turkeys, 7 ducks, and 4 guineas with two more working on breaking out and plae 8 chicken eggs under a broody hen and six in the bator ... 7/8 under broody made it and 4/6 bators made it to lock down and seem to be progressing ..pics posted on post 15946

Tony candled day 7 and threw our 7 infertiles and has to cull the delaware he got at the flea market
aww sharron shared pics !!! post 15951 -21 brahmas and 1 blue wheaten cross
aww .. doug had to put the second chick down this morning (yeah they are just chickens but we all love them and knowing that doesn't often change how hard it is to cull one when it has to be done)![]()
from all of us![]()
Tony said that sharon's brahmas look like darks to him
jime said they had Sebastopol geese that were gotten rid of because they were mean too
Sumi had lovely words for doug on post 15959
lizanne had6/12 safeway eggs hatch last night
and sadly lost one that was malpositioned .. cute chicks though - post 15960 and in a moment of weakness got 3 mixed bantams from the feed store when going to get food

sharron also has more pipping in the bator from shipped eggs
and is glad tony thinks her chicks are dark brahmas as she has no place to put lights !!
Wax myrtle accidentally but 10 eggs in the bator somehow instead of putting it away and told sharron that avie is a sign she should give in to the sudden urge to have another budgie
Chickenofthe VI joined us in the chat -and asked If the chicks have dried, could I open the bator and take them out? Or will it harm the other pips and non pipped eggs? Plus, today is day 18 for some shipped buff rocks I got as well, so I have to put them on lockdown too... Could I open bator and place them in as well, even though the first lockdown hasn't finished yet?![]()
I think as long as you mist the inside of the bator (not the eggs) and do it quickly it is ok to take out the hatched and possibly throw in the eggs ... but i will scroll and see what other advice , if any was given
and ty fo the zip will add it to the others as i work on the map!!
Doug welcome ChickVI oh and he was taking the broody off the nest on day 23 but heard chirping from the eggs so back she went
Doug ... as per one of my last summaries... i am working on poutting everyone on a map for us and i asked for zip codes ..again lol
Rennerae asked if its bad she is planning her 3rd hatch already ... and ive considered HRIR myself but have no idea where to get them
rennerae aslo asked :
What are your favorites? (breeds i am assuming) Where did you find hatching eggs ( if you did). And why do you like them?
I like the jersey giants and am hatching some now..well they are in lcokdown
I got eggs from a great lady here on BYC
We love them because they are big birds but also very friendly birds !!
QUESTION: Upon gathering eggs today I had 15... I didn't gather yesterday so I expected a decent number... Problem? I only have 7 hens. Is it possible for a hen to lay twice?
I say yes ... I had a white hen that would lay once in the morning and once at night every other day ...knew they were hers because she was the only white egg layer i had
anyone elsee? opinions?
QUESTION 2: Three eggs had dents... looked like a pip. I am assuming one of the hens pecked them. Is there a reason why they would peck at their own eggs? A deficiency?
I had a hen that would accidentally peck the eggs when she would try to move them but i think it can be a sign of defiency too .. but no expert here ... again .. anyone else?
Cody asked :
I know people have had some success using trader joes, and whole foods eggs, but has anyone ever tried Wal Mart eggs, and if so what was your experience with them?
I have not tryied to hatch them before cody but it is funny you should mention it ... i noticed in the last dozen that we got ...there were indeed fertile eggs in that dozen not al lbut some .. so maybe its possible
Sally checked in to say she misses us and will try to be on some time tommorow
We miss you too !!
I have 3 JGs out an one that I am slowly assissting.. it seems to be so big it is stuck so i have been dampening the membrane and taking it slowly as there is some veiningWeekend summary 5/18/2013~5/19/2013![]()
Oz suggested to cody to make sure and look for eggs that say fertile when shopping for walmart eggs to hatch
chicksooner answered rennerae's questions as well - post 16002
and had 1 last lonely chick trying to hatch
waffle tried to save a baby bunny but sadly it did not make itfrom us all![]()

Tony jusy built his thirdrooster house an hasa community sections an will be starting on a 4th house
and welcomed chickenoftheVI
as well as taking two pekins off the nest eww rotten eggs ... my pekin set and didn't hatch either but it was the eggs not a lack of trying ..
he also sadly lost a heritage deleware
sharron asked how tony will keep the roosters from fighting and he replied that haing more together seemed to cause less fighting
sharron has decided she might try that one day
and tony replied that it takes patience
doug had a surprise late blooming non hen possbily
chicksooners chick seems to be doing okay for now
and replied to doug that sometimes hens crow ?!?
Oz posted a picture of the community bator we all want some day - post 16207 - lol
Sumi suggested xhixksonner put the hen off the nest somewhere outside with her chicks and block access to the nest until dark ..then let her in with chicks only for the night
sparky asked for suggestions on how to safely move her broody hen and duck - post 16031
Ms steak asked for advice :
Please help. I posted in the emergency thread. One person didn`t really say much but the day doesn`t matter. Now someone else has said they are shrink wrapped. I am so upset. I have been posting about this for ages.
Any advice please?
I have some bantam eggs in a home made incubator. It is now day 25, but last night 4 of the chicks internally pipped. Oh heck. You can tell I am new to this.
My humidity meter had died. Anyway, quickly put in a new one, just a probe, and the humidity was very low. I had to open the incubator to put in a wet cloth soaked in warm water, so now it is around 60%. I just can`t get it any higher. Last night I could hear some peeping, but that hasn`t happened for hours. How long is the longest you have waited for an outside pip?
waffle suggested wetting the membrane and slowly start peeling back .. if you see blood stop and after it stops try a little more .. it is a slow process (see sally's link on assissted hatches!! )
https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching that is the link - sumi shared it
update?
last upsate i just read was two still breathing
doug said the crower was more pullet than hen and was sure a strange thing
sumi said she dampes membranes with a qtip n water and suggested ribbling a little sugar water on their beaks
ToastnJelly posted a rabbit formula for anyone who might need it in the future - https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/526870/house-rabbit-baby-formula _ and said good job that waffle did at least try !!

3 BUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DARN!! Send me some Polish!!! AWESOMENESS DOUG!I just picked up a dozen Blue Sumatra and 9 White Crested Black Polish. Dad picked them up for me. Cost me a grand total of 3 dollars. Lol. Heading home to put them in the bator with 20 Wyandotte eggs I set earlier today.
Hi bellah, sometimes the shape of the air cell can cause malpositions as they cant turn or do turn but sometimes the air cell is so odd it makes it tough for them to externally pip. I have oddballs I candle a lot during lockdown watching for internal pips, and see whats going on in there. mist the side or the top of the bator for instant humidity boost and your other eggs will be fine. just keep upright and don't wiggle jiggle during candle just view.Anyone have any advice about hatching wobbley air cell duck eggs? Tomorrow is lockdown and all I know is to hatch upright but are there extra issues I will have to deal with?
1 egg of 26 at day 7? ohhhh Dark eggs, I just had this issue with Chads eggs. I have had a slosher hatch! One of those polish for sara was a slosher, slosher being rolling loose nasty watery air cell until the end! and YUPPERS she hatched! But I didn't mess with that egg much at all during incubation, only tilted the egg carton gently!I just candled. I saw veining in one egg of 26. And that was one of my "barnyard mixes". I am hoping it is at least an EE. Of course, chances are good it will be. My Am is the head roo in that coop.
I pulled 2 definite blood rings. Both mine. I left a few that looked like they may have blood rings, but it could just be the way I was looking. I was trying to get through all the eggs as fast as I could. I was more worried about determining whether or not the air cells were reattached and the right size.
I hate to ask this question, but sloshing in the shell is a scrambled egg, isn't it?![]()
BTW, I am only one week in, and most of the eggs are chocolate. Candling, as you know, is tricky.
ohhhhh a new breed eh??? My sons could use a hen that lays them!Broody #1 is doing awesome as a mom. I had to move some younger birds in to the coop with her and was worried about the chicks. That girl is mean as heck. I thought she was going to kill me the other day when I dared pick up one of her chicks. That did get her big butt up and moving. They have been exploring the coop and were in the run for a few minutes today. Their cuteness is inspiring...brooding #2 decided to hatch golf balls tonight.![]()
awwwwww
Tony you have pics? I had to cut my cochins staph infection out with a exacto knife and soak daily 20 minutes, give antibiotics, probotics because of antibiotics and use veterycin and vetiwrap for a week and she was fine afterwards. DH had to Vet assist with that deal though, where goggles and if you do it I can give you a few tips and issues we ran into along the way.I think one of my girls has a bumble foot. I soaked it in epsom salt for 10 mins then put some cream and wrapped it up. How long should I leave it wrapped up you think?
Glad everybody is doing OK. Been raining the last few days so been on the PS3, if I wasn't playing in the rain. LOL
Mornin Tony! How's the woods down there? Still rainy here!Hi Sally!!![]()
