Hi everyone! I had a very poor hatch of shipped eggs. Despite Wisher1000's wonderful packaging, they came a long way and were beat up. Out of 14 eggs 1 chick hatched. 3 were early deaths, 4 were late deaths, and 7 were scrambled. The chick that hatched is an adorable Silver Campine. She is very healthy and will run around the brooder, eat, and drink. I am however looking for 1 or 2 other chicks so that she doesn't have to be alone.

Here is the Silver Campine chick. I still need a name for her.

She likes to cuddle with her new friend mirror.

So after two really bad hatches on shipped eggs I will definitely get local eggs next time. Even with a great packaging job like Wisher1000's, shipping eggs is very hard on the eggs.

Good job putting the mirror in there! At least you got one. My only try with shipped egg and didn't come that far was 0!!

My hatches are usually around 1/3 hatching from shipped eggs. The last batch I had, which was very well packaged, were scrambled. Hatching them is an enjoyable hobby so I'm happy if I hatch any.

Maybe try getting eggs from a different part of the country or only from within your state and see if thar helps. I can't get hatching eggs locally for the quality of breeds that I want so I've got to do shipping.

Don't give up!!!!

Another GORGEOUS day in PA!!!!

YAY!!!!! I think I will wash my prego Springer today and see how her tick bite is doing, I got the tick out but she still has this huge like nodule thing I am not sure what to do about! its weird! not like infected or pussy or green just a hard ball inside???? I squeezed it and nothing came out its just hard. about the size of M&M
Are you talking about a dog? Check her gums. If they go pale get her to a vet very, very quickly. Actually, take her to a vet anyway.

Funny story........................I think

Yesterday, I had a half grown chick drown. It got in one of the goose swimming pools. I had one get in before but it stood until I got it out. This one didnt. Anyway, I put it on top of the cage that I put the dead duck in to try to catch whatever ate the ducks head. This morning, the cage hadnt been tripped but in the place of the chicken was a mouse. I guess my cat traded me. LOL Must of preferred chicken.
Thats funny!! nature has it's moments! death is just a side dish.

She's adorable! Sorry to hear about your bad hatch though.. If she's restless and lonely, hang a feather duster in the brooder for her to crawl under. Just don't hang it close to the heat source (it soaks up heat like you won't believe). It was the only way I could get my lone chick quiet sometimes.

I am going to try that. Thank you!

Quote: Hang the duster just high enough so you can slip your hand (palm down) under it without moving it. Then put her down and slowly lower the duster so it covers her. It may take a few tries before she gets the idea. And please be careful with it near heat. One of mine very nearly caught fire once. Stick your hand under it now and then to check the temperature.

Haven't posted in a while, things have been sooo... busy, but I had to say After MUCH begging, BYC got tank tops for the ladies. Mine shipped out yesterday!!
