i realize im not oz, but here is a turner design i made for larger incubators. the timer motor is a replacement motor for hovabator turners. the switches are available at radio shack, the unlabeled component is a linear actuator available at www.surpluscenter.com this will turn about 200 lbs worth of equipment and eggs, slowly and effeciently.

this is a link to the exact actuator i am using, if it helps: http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?item=5-1762-L&catname=electric
I have a linear actuator at home I have been toying with.

How does the turner motor come into play? Arent you using the actuator to raise and lower the turner?

I happen to have a turner with 2 missing rows you could have for ... say ... some eggs
That's a good deal

My bators are washed and about to be stored. Half of my hatches are going to family this Wednesday night. I will be growing out about 14 other chicks plus caring fir my 5 adult birds. I have plans to finish my grow out pen and the coop for my adults with a run. I'm still looking for a Polish, a Silkie, a BCM, and a Partridge Wyandotte to add to my flock but then I will be content for a while.

Mine's been in storage since... April. Exactly 3 months now. Gosh it's no wonder I'm getting hatch withdrawals! LOL I've got lots of loose ideas for chickens etc here, but right now I just want to hatch something, anything, and get more hens for eggs for household use. We are getting one or 2 per day from the new hens, but it's nowhere near enough. The coop and run is still in the design stage though we've been collecting lots of "recyclable" goodies. Wood and shade cloth mostly. Handy to live with a builder

I'm hoping for some mesh and sheets, but nothing got tossed out yet. Maybe at the next job?

This might be a little untraditional but I use the plastic egg flats and also take them out after 2 weeks,,,,I seem to get better hatches if I stop turning earlier and lay the eggs on their side for a couple days before moving to the hatcher..(I experiment way to much, and have lots of mutts to show for it)
From what I have read, turning is the most critical early on - when the yoke can push the embryo up against the wall of the egg.

After 14 days it's not essential to run them any more, but I do anyway. If anyone's interested, I've done some reading to find out why turning is so important and found this:

- It prevents the embryo adhering to the inner shell membrane.
- It stimulates the rate of development of area vasculosa (the membrane growing around the yolk, which is rich in blood vessels). This membrane is important for sub-embryonic fluid formation, as well as yolk uptake later in incubation.
- Allows normal transfer of albumen (egg white) protein into the amniotic fluid, promoting optimum use of the albumen.
- Supports the growth of the chorio-allantois (blood vessels in the inner membrane covering the chick) that absorbs oxygen and basically breathes for the developing embryo.
- Helps the embryo develop and grow at the correct rate.
- Encourages the embryo to to move into the normal hatching position, thereby reducing malpositions.

serious? when is your next trip? My BIG girls lay like crap and I don't know if I can gather as quick as you need for that sorta travel. IF they stop being broody and start laying again! I have orders to fill, but they just don't care!

I will admit, my worst hatch ever was with Chads styro bator with turner : ( perhaps I shouldn't use one. Even my own eggs I had some deaths. I find they look totally different at candle when in turner than laying flat.

On local eggs with a turner in a styrobator I get 90+%

There is a link to hatching 101 in my siggy - it has all sorts of useful info....
