Quote: Now those I have had as well, those are nasty nasty and you have to debate bathing the hen or not! grossness!! I wont let a hen that is mean brood anything again! only hens I can get under without an full out attack!

I had one explode during my second hatch. I was new and I was simply following the short instructions that came with my styrofoam incubator.

It happened on day 19 and the odor was horrible. I heard the 'bang' and quickly cleaned all of the eggs and rinsed out the incubator as best as I could. After the hatch, I spent hours trying to bleach the smell out. Yuck.

You'll be able to smell a stinky egg days before it explodes.

When I was a young'un, I picked up a bird's egg that was on the ground..... I guess I handled it a little rough 'cause it broke open.... TALK ABOUT A BAD SMELL !!! I could not out run that smell..... I think I was scrubbed from head to toe by mom..... and my clothes were trashed..... Way too long ago to remember all the details, but what I remember is a lesson learned.....

Why do I keep trying to let broodies hatch out eggs? When will I learn? I have a game bird sitting on some ameraucana eggs. She went broody and so I stuck a few under her to make her happy. She's on day 18 and she just gets up off the nest this morning like she has every other morning. Doesn't she know she's on lockdown?! I took some hardware cloth and stapled it over the opening to her nestbox. Problem solved.

Sally, sorry you're having so much trouble with that netting. Its been trouble for you from the beginning.

I did a little experiment, not sure what it proves, but I thought it was interesting. I went through my bator and took out the clears. I weighed them against the live eggs. They all lost weight but the live eggs were consistently in a range of about 2-3g each (day 10), but the clears were all over the board between 1-3g. I think that it means that it may be extra important to remove clears or blood spot eggs on a regular basis if you're doing a dry incubation because they do indeed lose moisture and that moisture can raise the humidity of your incubator.

Question, I just vaccinated for mareks last Saturday. When can I get these freakin' birds outta my laundry room? I mean, when would it be safe to allow the little darlings to come in contact with my adult flock? Anybody know, I'm having trouble finding the answer on the Pfizer site.

Don't worry. She knows what she's doing. I often open my incubator during lockdown.

If it's day 18, then she doesn't have to go into "lockdown" until she has internal pips. Even when there are pips, she can still get up for a quick potty break.

Lockdown is a general term. I think it's mostly used to keep newbies from opening the incubator too much and to give them a specific day to switch the incubator to hatching conditions.

The odor is horrible. I'd choose skunk over rotten egg any day.
