Why do I keep trying to let broodies hatch out eggs? When will I learn? I have a game bird sitting on some ameraucana eggs. She went broody and so I stuck a few under her to make her happy. She's on day 18 and she just gets up off the nest this morning like she has every other morning. Doesn't she know she's on lockdown?! I took some hardware cloth and stapled it over the opening to her nestbox. Problem solved.
Sally, sorry you're having so much trouble with that netting. Its been trouble for you from the beginning.
I did a little experiment, not sure what it proves, but I thought it was interesting. I went through my bator and took out the clears. I weighed them against the live eggs. They all lost weight but the live eggs were consistently in a range of about 2-3g each (day 10), but the clears were all over the board between 1-3g. I think that it means that it may be extra important to remove clears or blood spot eggs on a regular basis if you're doing a dry incubation because they do indeed lose moisture and that moisture can raise the humidity of your incubator.
