Diary of Mommy Satin’s First Hatch

Day 20

Rainy and humid today. Summer weather can never be nice can it :(

Well...The babies are getting brave! Daring to go for the big bird’s food. Ofcourse the big girls will have none of it, and shoo the annoying little flitter flutter hoppy things away with pecks of ouchie. The kiddos scream and run away, only to come right back a minute later. I’m starting to think they’re enjoying this...

They’re much braver than momma. Maybe they’ll protect mommy from the big mean birbs when they grow up

When I opened the coop this morning, the littlies were out and about, and the cage looked quite cramped. I might actually prop open the cage door just far enough for the little ones to explore the coop in the early morning.

I’m pretty sure number 1 is a roo...

It’s been a cool night, and will be a cold day tomorrow. Momma is in full expansion mode.

Day 22

Yep, chickies teaching mom how to roost

I put mommy on the small ladder for the littlies to follow, but they one upped her!

Day 25

Nothing too exciting has been happening, so the updates have slowed.

I brought home three 6 week old bantams, which happen to be the same size as the three weekers. Of course momma wasnt going to be fooled 😂 and pecked them away. They’re pretty self sufficient on their own anyway, so it’s all good :) hopefully they will grow into some decent future companions for momma.

Momma didn’t notice at first and fooled me into thinking they would all get along.

I couldn’t get a good photo of the third one, or rather she jumped onto my head when I tried...

I've always wanted d'uccles. They're so adorable.:)

Day 28 - Off to a new home

I found someone to adopt all of Paint’s children, so tonight will be their last night at home.

Here are some final photos at 4 weeks old!

I also finally remembered yesterday to take a video of the chicks putting themselves to bed. Of course my phone decided to run out of storage half way through filming, lol.

What an adventure!
I’m blessed to have such a sweet broody who let me handle her, her eggs and her chicks. She never peeped a cluck of complaint when I held her babies, so they ended up being wonderful friendly chicks. Although not quite lap chickens, they will not hesitate to follow me around and hop all over me for a treat. I hope they will also be loved in their new abode <3

Adieu for now!

Awwww, bittersweet I’m sure! You and momma Paint did such a great job from start to finish, thanks for sharing her story!
