Diatomaceous Earth Dewormer

Hello! I'm, like, 98% certain my chickens have worms, and I had read on a couple sites that mixing a little diatomaceous earth into their food can be a good dewormer. Both me and my dad are really stingy so we'd rather not spend money on a fancier dewormer if it can be avoided, as we already have diatomaceous earth on hand. Does anyone have any experience using this as a dewormer? I know there's some controversy over the use of this. Any other suggestions for a cheap & easily accessible dewormer?

It does nothing to kill any type of parasite.


I use a natural dewormer that's lab, & field tested.

DE is completely worthless. It also becomes inactive when wet.

If your chickens do have worms, use an actual dewormer such as Fenbendazole or Valbazen. You can pick up a tube of Safeguard for around $10. A syringe to measure is even cheaper.

Horse paste dewormer is cheap (for a tube)...if you have a small flock.

If you are gonna be using a chemical dewormer then yes.

Correct normally it’s 14 days after last dose that you will want to discard the eggs, if you used DE you could eat the eggs right away BUT your chickens will STILL have worms. Also if chickens free range they will always have worms you’re trying to keep it under control.
Full disclaimer I started collecting eggs after day 13 and once I started eating those eggs my leg would randomly raise up every time I walked by a tree. Kinda like a dog,luckily it only last a few days.

I sell eggs, so deworming with a chemical dewormer would be a waste for me, so I use natural dewormer instead.


It's your choice with what wormer you want to use.

DE does nothing to worms, and it’s also dangerous for a chicken to breathe in. Once it’s wet, it can’t do a thing and is a waste of time and money. Curious where you heard that it worked.
