Diatomaceous Earth

Royal Hills-

I went to ecosmart's webpage you listed earlier.

it tells you it uses organic oils, pepermint oils, and cinnamon oils etc....then it says see the product lable for more info---but the product label is not online.

Also, where is the research? It's not listed on their web site.

I'm a huge DE fan, but always open to suggestions.

Most of "the science' is in my head that I was referring to. I have twenty years of plant science background and plants are very effective at creating oils to repel or kill insects.
I also read MSDS sheets daily as my job, and those don't worry me at all. There are many substances we use daily that are toxic, natural and man-made. Everything has limits and should be used safely. Example, table salt. It is more toxic to people than a large percentage of the pesticides on the market and we sprinkle it on our food for flavor (me included).
That is a whole "nother" story. The plant oils referenced in that product I feel, based on my experience should work well and they claim to have found a unique combination of them that works well together. I can't find any flaws in their marketing like I can with many products. It makes sense to me. And no, I don't currently sell any of the "green' products we have discussed in case anyone is wondering.

Not to cause more of a stir here, but I have found this thread extremely interesting, and just want to add my 2 cents worth.

We have, just this year, moved onto 13 acres. We have maybe 3 or 4 acres cleared, and the rest is HEAVILY wooded. Ticks were a horrible problem for us. We were all (including the kids) getting 3-5 ticks a week, no matter how we dressed, etc.

I would walk across the yard to put the chickens out, and come in to find a tick hanging off my leg. It was awful.

After seeing it here on BYC, we ordered a 50 lb. bag of DE (which BTW, will take us YEARS to use, lol). The hubby masked up, and spread it around the house, the kid's playgym, everywhere we we sat or were active.

We haven't had a tick in MONTHS. I use it in the animals' feed, no worms in the cats or dog, which are 100% outside animals. It makes huge anthills disappear. I use it in the coop and the chicken's dusting areas. The birds have no ticks, mites, etc., and as far as that goes, neither have the other animals outside, and the poor cats used to get INFESTED with them.

All the science in the world would not change my mind about how it works. My own personal experience has shown me that it works, and that's enough for me.

JMHO-

Thanks Royal Hills-

I had assumed to had read some research... my bad for assuming.

I am a huge DE fan and like Jess have had good personal experience with it.

I did recently add orange oil to my arsenal-- I spray it on all the wood in my coop as well as add a few drops to my white vinegar when spraying weeds in my driveway.

I've been tossing around the idea of using peppermint oil in the garage for mice/rats/bugs...but I haven't gotten to the actual do it stage yet. I like to mull over things and discuss it with people to see all different points of view about it before I actually decide.

I'm not sure about this new product yet, but it's on my "watch and see" list.

Thank you for sharing.
