Did anyone watch Nightline last night? LOCAVORES

I my husband saw it and kept waking me up through segments of it.. it was neat.. I think that he liked the fact that they were so self contained.. and then he made the comment well we have chickens.. Made me think that he was glad that we had em.. I am so glad for that.

This is very popular in Vermont as a concept- just not terribly practical. We have a "growing season" of about 3 months.

One of my priorities has been to get a hand pump for our well. Unfortunately, it is a deep well, and finding something that will work deep and not freeze up in the winter is a challenge. I haven't found a solution yet. But, with the horses, I hate being without water!

Hey valmom -- your other option is to get several large storage pressure tanks for your well. That way even if you lose power you will still have some pressurized water on hand. It is probably more expensive, but may be a better option for you. Good luck!

About the family in California who raises all their food on 1/5 acre in suburban Pasadena (I think it was Pasadena)? That was so cool. I saw a couple of small goats in the clip and a chicken. Looked like a D Uccle to me. It said they lived on $30K a year, sold their Xtra produce locally and sold eggs. Outdoor shower with solar heat. Solar panels on roof. Oh yeah bio diesel car $1 gallon for "gas" made from used vegie oil. They are LOCAVORES the new word of the new age!!!!!!!!

Thanks for sharing! I missed the episode but went online and watched this segment - truly amazing people. Something everyone should be striving for. I know that after watching I will be making my veggie garden a little bit bigger!

When the father first started out his kids were very young and the neighbors thought he was goofy taking out his lawn and planting vegetables.. Something on those lines,,,,,now his kids are 20s and 30s,,,,and now they are giving tours. I grow some stuff in the front yard and my neighbors think I am pretty goofy.,,,, maybe they will change their minds.I am nothing like that and cant be because I also live in about a 3 month growing season but that can be extended some with effort. Yeah I think it does take a lot of energy I dont know if I have. I like the idea though a lot.,,,,

yes I moved here 10 years ago and have been working on the yard/garden,,,,it was a junk yard when I moved here,,,,but boy do we have a lot of shade. I started a rain garden in the front to stop the massive run off of rain water,,,,and all the neighbors are dosing their lawns with chemicals

I have bad asthma and I am allergic to these chemicals but they are not illegal,,,,yet. Is there a book The Omnivoures Dillemna? I want to read that,,,anyone heard of that and what is in it?
