Did I do the right thing? I feel horrible!!!

Sounds to me like you did the very best thing you could do in the situation. You handled it very well. It was the best and kindest thing you could do for her and you made a good decision for her. Sorry for your loss.

The girl I'm holding in my avatar is Marilyn. You can see a picture of Eloise at my BYC page.

I'm starting to feel a little bit better about the whole thing thanks to all of you and my network of friends and family.

Thanks again to all of you. You've all been so supportive - and have really helped me to start healing.

And things go from bad to worse! Now Marilyn - yes the one in my avatar - is dying! She is lethargic and just standing in front of the watering pail. She drinks and drinks and drinks and drinks. I think she has kidney failure! She's always been a little "sickly" and has always shown symptoms of diabetes. She eats a lot - but doesn't gain weight and she drinks enormous amount of water. But since yesterday afternoon she just keeps drinking and drinking and drinking. When I pick her up to comfort her - water just pours out of her mouth! Her eyes look so funny too!

I cannot do the deed myself again! Fortunately I found a vet in the area who's allowing me to bring her in this morning to put her out of her misery!

Why is this happening to me all of a sudden!?!?!?!?!

My dog is sick too!!!!!!

So I go home to get her and take her to the vet and who do you think is running around acting like she's just fine??? Marilyn!!! OMG! I told her she just bought herself some time. What a few days I've had!!

Nobody is a better judge of when your chicken needs to be put down than you. I have had to put down 3 old dogs at different times and held them in my arms as they passed. There is always guilt associated with it, but it really is the best thing to do.

I'm sorry for your loss and am keeping you in my thoughts.

Aw I sowwie, I dont know if I could cull one myself...even if it were suffering I would have to wait for DH to get home and do it. Youre very brave doing the best thing for your birds in spite of how sad it is for you!

You are a Very STRONG woman!!! You knew deep down what had to be done and you did it. As care takers of our pets and animals it is our responsibility to see that their needs are met and that we provide what is best for them - in all things - including death. So yes, you did do the right thing by Eloise in that you did not allow her to continue to suffer.

It was certainly not easy, but you really had her best interests at heart and didn't allow her to continue to suffer.

Take good care of yourself too!!!!

You are a strong person and did what you did showing her the love you had for her. I don't think I could have done it even tho I love my chickens dearly!
She is at peace now and not suffering anymore!
