6 Rhode Reds
3 Barred Rocks
3 white Leghorns
6 White Plymouth rocks
6 Black Australorpes
and 1 Buff Orpington
I think I'd have gotten 'em in just about that ratio, Tim. I haven't had either Leghorns or White Plymouth Rocks, however. And, the only Rhode Island Red I've owned was a rooster. Despite some other's experience, he was a real gentle bird.
Until they get White Australorps into this country, I'd enjoy having the White Rocks to nearly match my Black hens. The Barred Rocks would be a blur between the whites and blacks.
Tim, they may all pick on chubby little Buffy so your son would do well to make her a special pet.
Welcome!! Great lot of birds ~ we have several of the ones you are getting, & we love them ~ our Rhode Island Reds are so funny & have so much personality ~ we named on of them ~Golom~ because she always pecks at rings. All 3 of the RIR are curious, and funny. Our Barred Rocks are so sweet, they love to be held, and will calmly hop right up into our laps. And our fluffy Buff Orps are just as sweet ~ they like to be held, and snuggle into the crook of my arm, watching everything.
Now the white leghorns ~ have you ever seen the movie Chicken Run? The little escape artist, Ginger is the exact mentality of our Piper. She looks for every opportunity to make a break, and she is usually encouraging other chickens to escape right along with her. Our other white leghorn, Sunny D ( for Sunday Dinner :-D ) is sweet as can be, and not flighty at all.
And we do have one black Austrolorp, and that one is a stinker. She tries to be at the top of the pecking order, but no-one will take any guff from her, and she rarely uses a dust bath, which makes her a bit snastier than the other chickens ~ we tell her she has hygiene problems ~ lol ~ She was also the one who had the uggliest, most difficult looking time with her feathers coming in ~ all the other chicks feathered out so pretty, they never went through the ~ugly gawky~ stage, but she made up for them all ~ bleah.
But we love her anyway. Sort of ~ lol ~ the kids tell her she is for sure on the auction block at the fair.
Good luck with your sweeties ~ wheeww ~ 25 of them!! ( we only have 15, & they are sort of contraband to boot)

Thanks for all the input from everyone,Atleast it boosts my confidence in this new family venture.
Steve,Yes my 10 yr old already ask me if he would be able to enter him in the Twp. fair in August
When your talking about making the buff a special pet do you mean to keep her completely away from the others? or just show more attention or ????
Thanks ,Tim
Welcome to BYC from South Central PA!
Of the breeds you chose I have black australorps and barred rocks; both ow which are pleasant, friendly and curious birds. The australorps are by far the most gentle of all my birds & one of the barred rocks is 2nd in command after my rooster, but she's friendly too.
They are only 12 weeks (almost 13) so I can't tell you about egg laying as of yet; but one of my factors of choice was productive egg laying...so
Looks like you did your homework! You made some great choices. I think it's good to try a mix at first, then you will be able to see what breeds you prefer. Have fun!
I think it was meant for you to just show the Buff more attention. Chickens are flock animals and usually don't do as well by themselves.
I think you picked a good assortment of breeds. I don't know if I would have suggested the Leghorns as a first chicken, just because of their reputation for being flighty.
As already mentioned, the leghorns will be a little more skittish, but if you spend a lot of time with them as young chicks, they can be just as friendly as the other breeds. It just depends on the individual chicken. Some are more social than others.
When you get your order, see if they got an extra Buff or two and get them, too. My chickens seem to have their little clicks by breed, and sometimes will not accept a different chick if it is the only one of that breed. (The RIR's stick together, and the Barred Rocks stick together). If there is only 1 Buff, it might get picked on. But it might not, either. Like I said, it depends on the individual chicken's personality.
Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS!!!
We will help as much as we can when you have questions.

Orpingtons just tend to be nonaggressive hens and she will stand out as an "only." She probably will fit in just fine with the group but may really appreciate extra, human attention.
