Did you ever get to watch a hen actually lay an egg?

I never had until today. My Appenzeller Spitzhaubens are the friendliest birds I have, next to my Silkies. My Spitz like to lay their eggs on top of the run, laying on a tarp.

Don't know why, but whatever makes them happy. Anyway, I'm standing there while DH is cleaning the coop and one of the Spitz's starts doing her egg dance and screech that Spitz's do, so I stood there quietly. I held the tarp down some for her so the wind wouldn't blow it all around.

After about 15 minutes of patience, I actually got a bird's eye view of a hen laying an egg. The whole process is so fascinating!

It was so cool. I've been waiting to see one of my hens lay for a year now.

My other Spitz has decided that we are buds and follows me around the "free range" pen (50X150) and has been flying up and perching on my shoulders and arms. Or I'll be standing at the run and she'll jump into my arms. I am in love with these girls:love

I hadn't seen one yet until recently. I had a hen with a prolapse, unfortunately she didn't make it. A few days later, I was out doing chores, walked by one of my serama pens and one of the hens was in a nest, no big deal. Walked by 15-20 later, she is still there. I started getting a little worried, since I had just lost a hen to a prolapse, so I picked her to check on her and noticed a bit of pooped on her bottom, not dried, but fresh, so I brushed it off and noticed she was straining a bit. This made me really worried, thinking she was prolapsing, so I started carrying her through the barn to take her to the house. I had her sitting in the palm of my hand when I noticed she was opening up, so I stuck my other hand up there and plop, she laid an egg in my hand!

Yes, we did! Our favorite hen, Billina, decided to lay her egg right in front of us on the sand substrate of our coop, so we were able to see the egg coming right out. Way cool.

i spend most of my time out with my girls, they are wayyyyyyyy to friendly.

Yeah I remember the first time I saw it. I actually, accidentally felt it too. One of my Brahmas was having an odd labored breathing, so I started to worry - Her vent was very visible too, so I was feeling if perhaps she was eggbound or had a prolapse or something - Nope, she was just simply laying an egg, and plop! Out it came, and I thought "Wow!" - I saw the actual laying of an egg!

Since then I learned when the hen actually lays the egg, and when she's just spending a lot of time in the box.
