What to do about a chicken with a really dirty bottom?

Soak them and wash it off, I would say use just water cause I imagine accidentally getting soap up anywhere wouldn't be fun but still be careful about getting water up anywhere ;D Is it a chick or an adult bird?

Pics would be good, as well as knowing the age of the bird and what all you are feeding.
I prefer to trim feathers rather than soak them clean.
Figuring the source of the problem is the first thing to do.
