Dirty Bum Feathers, No Diarrhea

My chocolate orpingtons are like that. They are just so darn fluffy that if I dont trim it, it gets dirty *_* no diarrhea and no mites.
For mites, I use a deep cat litter pan and mix wood ash (from our wood boiler), DE, and permethrin powder and let them go to town. Never any problems ^_^ I also have the spray the I have used, but find this works better on the birds.
Good luck!

Ok. I just spent some quality time with a flashlight, a pair of scissors, and my chickens' derrieres. No sign of mites or lice. Just some yucky residue. No white stuff, all poopy brown. I couldn't get pics, though. Too dark, and I wouldn't have been able to hold my phone and inspect their tushies.

I think I will hold off on treating them for creepy crawlies for now. But I will continue to monitor the situation.

If you'd have suggested a year ago that I'd be getting this up close and personal with the backside of chickens, I would have accused you of being off your rocker.

That’s funny! I seem to recall a similar conversation in another thread about chicken poop... “the things they DON’T tell you about when you bring home those first eggs or cute little fluff balls” was my response there too... aye, the chicken poop photos on my phone are so much fun to explain when I go to show someone e a beautiful sunset and have to scroll through a couple dozen poop photos to get to it! And those pics of chicken butts are for professional consultation only...

Glad you’re not seeing any signs of external parasites though! Maybe it’s just poopy butts without other complications? And if you get the chance google “Janet bum bum feathers” for and if it’s a talking chicken video...:lau story of my life right now!

Oh, I love janet!

I'm up late looking at ordering silkies. Can you believe it?! Chicken math...

Oh, yes... I think we can all believe it! My current Mantra is “I will not buy chicks or eggs until I have 4 more Tractors built out!” Every time the Breeder I’ve been buying from posts on Facebook (which seems to be every time I open the darn app!) I look away from my phone and repeat that 5 times... I have lumber, more hardware cloth, and as soon as all this white stuff melts...

I’m also limited in that I need warmer temperatures and more light... I’m going to order 50-100 meat birds to start and don’t have enough electricity to brood them in the barn. I’m going to have to get them outside ASAP from the garage or figure out how to Brood with just 4 12v deep cycle marine batteries and 400watts of solar that’s mostly in the shade right now!

Otherwise, the farm would have been covered with chickens by now! AKA: I have practically No willpower when it comes to chickens! I quit smoking after ten years... but those little fluffies? how can you resist?

Good Call!! I never treat unless I see the bugs.
I use dust in winter and spray in summer.

Kudo's on your Butt Barber Badge!!

We finally got some decent weather, so it’s chicken bum bum baths, trim, and blow dry time again for me too... this time I’m Vaseline coating their butts to see if that helps! I’ve learned a good bit from this thread and I’m sure others have too! Hoping I got all the crawlies after our last bath time, but I’ll be checking closely.
