disabled chicken

dlhunicorn,
Where can I find that poem so I can print it out? It's a great comfort.

You did what you had to...

I had a bird go from running around the yard to being only able to move her head and one wing within a week...On her last day, I put her outside so that she could at least feel the grass on her feet and the sun on her feathers and a hawk came and ended her suffering for me.

Hugs.

Oh, I am so sorry for your loss! I too put down my first hen this week, and it was one of the hardest things I ever did. There is no doubt in my mind you did that was best: it is clear you already understand that when we care for animals we take the responsibility for making the tough decisions, including helping them into the next world when their suffering is too great. It is the hardest and bravest thing we will ever do for our animal friends, and I salute your decision to do the right thing.

Jen,
Thank you for your kind words. I just came home from the farm and it hurts so much to leave there without putting her in my truck on the back seat on her pillow. The pillow is still there and it brings me to tears when I see it. I just can't take it out of the truck yet. When I arrived home, her crate is still in the garage and there are some of her feathers in it. I can't remember in my life when I have felt such a loss. I can't stop crying. I'm a wreck!! I loved her very much and I didn't realize how much a part of my everyday she was until she was gone. I know that time will make it better but right now it really sucks!! Thanks again for your concern.

You are obviously a very selfless person to have taken such good care of her all this time. And you were brave enough to do what needed to be done!

With that said I know it's still hard for you.

I have only had my chickens for a few months and would really hate to lose one.

I bet your dog misses her too.

Sorry for your loss, but know that you did what you had to do.

Rebecca,
Thank you. I am fortunate to have found wonderful people like you on this website to help with your kind words and thoughts. It's extremely comforting to me. I know I did the right thing for her but my heart aches soooo much. My dog, however, is happy to have the whole back seat of my truck to himself again. When she could still walk a little bit, she used to like to lean against him and would bumble across the back seat and crowd this 100 pound black lab into a 2 foot spot! It was hysterical to see his face! I have some photos. If I can figure out how to post them I will. Thank you again for your concern.

Kim
