First I would fix the bator issues then...100 is a tad low for a still air. I aim for 102 at the top of the eggs.

Also, quail can withstand temperature variations but humidity continuity is key for them. I *highly* recommend a hygrometre...you can get one for $3 at Walmart. Keep the humidity at 40-50% for the first 14 days and then up it to 70-75% for the last 4 days. Humidity is very important to quail as they are sensitive to it.

HTH!

I feel your pain- I had a disappointing hatch recently myself- but I know exactly why- temp spike in the bator on day 15...

stupid bator went crazy while I was at work.

I got a thermometer with a humidity readout for only $3.25 at wal-mart- I would recommend using something like that to monitor the humidity as quail depend on the humidity a lot.

I am trying not to get discouraged and you shouldn't either- from what I've read a lot of people have a tough time with their first tries. If I were you I'd jump on that kind offer from KellyHM in a heartbeat and try again! best of luck-

Actually 100 Is Fine For Still Air (all Literature Points To 99 For Forced/ 100 For Still)! And Rather Than Spend 3 Bucks On A Hygrometer Spend 8 And Get The Digital Thermometer And Hygrometer Combo In The Same Section Of That Walmart--- They Are Small White Instruments That Are Normally Very Accurate. Looks Somewhat Like A Travel Alarm Clock--- Has A Spring Loaded Clip And Magnet On The Back--- They're Great! And A Autoturner Is A Great Help Too If You Dont Already Have 1.

Good Luck, Dont Get Discouraged There's Always Good Days And Bad--- Not Any Different With Incubating....

If You Have Questions About Viability With The Eggs Your Cookin Now Flaot Test Them Before You Pitch 'em.

already have an auto egg turner, just shelled out 8 bucks for a POS humidity reader at the local overpriced petstore...says my room humidity is 60..?? gonna return it and make the drive to wal-mart @_@

I guess it depends on the incubator too and how it holds heat? Everything I'd read on the incubation board pointed to the issue of heat layering. If you want the center of the egg to be 99.5*f then you need to know what temp you want to see on your thermometre, depending on where you place it...102 at the top of the eggs means a slightly lesser heat at egg mid-egg-level. Even with an accurate thermometre, I found my hatch was on day 18 when kept at 102* for the coturnix.

Here's the thermometer that JJMR is talking about...he's right it's about $8 at walmart. It's found in the kitchen gadgets aisle with the thermometres you put outside your kitchen window, y'know the ones?
