Nothing to report. The one that tried to break through, nothing more to report. The second egg has not done anything. My DH really wants to help the one who has cracked the shell. No movement, no sound, no nothing...... How long should we wait? Could we candle and look for movement if we are very careful?

I usually end up having to help one or two of my chicks out of every hatch. I know that there is a belief out there that if they can't hatch on their own, they are too weak to survive but so far that hasn't been the case for me. I haven't lost any of my chicks that I have helped out of many, many hatches… I think the key is knowing when to intervene if it is necessary. I think there are some chicks that just get too tired to go any further and need a little push. I will watch and if the activity seems to slow tremendously then I help them out very slowly. If you think about it, humans need help too, sometimes giving birth just doesn't go the way it's supposed to. A leg may be caught funny, or the chick may be position oddly in the shell and can't quite push itself out. Go with your gut and if you think the baby needs help, start out very slowly and if you see a yolk sac or blood, stop, make sure the chick is not too dry, and wait a bit longer. Good luck.

I wouldn't help yet - from pip to starting to zip can take much longer than 10 hours. As an example, on Friday night I had one pip around 9pm, a second at 11pm and a third pipped around 2:30am (don't ask me how I know

) It was the one that pipped at 2:30am that was the first to hatch around 7:30am. The one who pipped second hatched second and the one who pipped first, didn't hatch until 1pm the following afternoon. So even in three eggs side by side there was a lot of variation in time from pip to zip and hatch.

And no, you don't always hear them chirping, even after they have pipped. Even my now 2-day old babies only stay awake for minutes at a time before taking their next chick-nap. So in the shell when they are working so hard, lots of naps are required.

Hand's off for me. I went and was looking at the eggs and heard a peep ................................................................Now I will nature run it's course. Thank you all for your help. Not sure I can do this again, much too stressful for me
