coryza
I am not sure if my chick who is one week old has coryza or not I can't tell its eyes is completely crusted over so it doesn't open and he can't see out of that eye. Should I separate the chick who has it or not? Please let me know what you think I really need your help. Thank You!!!

Welcome to BYC. Where did the chick come from? Can you use some saline or water and some tissue to soak the eye, and get it open. Flush it with saline eye drops and keep it cleaned. Terramycin Eye Ointment from the feed store or some Vetericyn eye gel may help, otherwise use saline which you can find in the eyedrops section of Walmarts and pharmacies. Do you see any other symptoms? Can you get the chick to eat and drink by holding it up to her beak if she cannot see?

Thank you for the advice I will definitely try that today.

If anyone else has thoughts please tell me the saline helped but is there something to help chicks recover from a bad cold because they are weak right now because they were only born about a week ago.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

I don't understand how a chick that age could have a "cold". Chicks are actually born with pretty high immunity except when suffering shipping stress. I too am very curious about where the chick came from.

The others have already been exposed. Separating the chick now would be too late and stressful for her. I would only separate her if she is being trampled or picked on.

Poultry Nutridrench... if you don't already have any supplement in the water. They should have it at most feed stores.

Homemade electrolyte solution (not as good, but to hold you over) 2 cups warm water, 2 tablespoons brown sugar (white or molasses is OK), and 1/2 teaspoon each salt and baking soda. Stir until dissolved and serve full strength. Other good things to add but not everybody has is 1/2 teaspoon salt substitute (it's potassium), and a few drop of Poly Vi Sol baby vitamins with NO iron.

Good luck!

Thank you so much she was hatched by one of my chickens but we had to take her from the mom because she wasn't taking care of her chicks right and the other chicks pecked her so we moved her and a friend into another little area.
