Disrespectful kids

The Only thing makes me always worry, if one of the kids (God forbid ) got injured thier pairents can and will sue.
Unfortunately we don't have any kids, but when one of my friends or neiboughrs come to visit with thier kids I make sure to let them understand that they have to be real careful and no touch policy or play policy alowed in my yard period, and infact I always let everybody know to come with no kids to visit if possible, I know it sounds rood, but that way no harm feeling!!

If I were you, I would have called the kids parents and asked them to bring them back to clean up. I have done several times in the past and the parents are always embarassed and they DO bring them back to clean up.

Remember that quite often kids are single minded. One minute they are playing with their minds in full fantasy mode, and the next minute Mom is here and it's time to go. I think it is the children's parents responsibility to make sure they understand what they need to do when visiting. My son who is 19 still has people come over that make a mess. I grab them by their hoodies on the way out the door and steer them back to the kitchen....

Good job, Enforcer!

My kiddo just turned 2 and when he throws something on the floor in a tantrum, I make him pick it up. I bet a lot of these parents didn't start with manners early enough and now they have little (or big) monsters on their hands.

I think you are right Amy!

Funny story: One halloween these older kids come to the door. I give them one small candy and mention they are too old for this. A few seconds later the doorbell rings again and it's the same kids! I said no more - they grabbed the huge bowl of candy from my arms and took off, leaving little kids behind them stunned. One kid, who was about 17 took off after them, brought them back, made them give me all their candy and called their parents from my home phone. Good kids rock!

Some people want things in the kids rooms picked up all the time. Some make them do a cleaning a couple times a week. And others don't care at all. So if you really want them to pick up when they are done you've got to go in the room at clean up time and make sure they do it. Otherwise don't count on it getting done. Here the kids clean up a couple times a week. I don't want to spend every day being the general inspecting their rooms. My daughter is way messier than my son and it takes her 5 times longer for her to clean up. But when they were younger and we lived in the same state as their cousins we never made them clean up at the end of play time whether it was my house or theirs we were at. The kids were so happy to see each other that we just wanted them to enjoy being together. Every once in a while they would get some bizarre ideas sometimes. Like doing skateboard tricks on the coffee table. But for the most part they just played with the toys and made a mess in the kids bedrooms.

Now that they are teens they aren't allowed to take their friends and raid the kitchen so no worries about a mess in there.

I set a precendence when my son was younger - a lot of his friends came from homes that were not in the best shape, drugs, alcohol, abuse, you name it. So we always had an open door, if they followed the rules, and an open fridge. My son thinks it is still in effect.

I have a good friend who's son will bring 4 or 5 of his buddies over after their basketball games and she will cook them all dinner separately from the dinner she's made for her, her hubby and her youngest. She does this on a regular basis. I can't imagine their grocery bill.

When parents don't enforce rules at home concerning picking up toys and such they sure aren't going to offer to do it at someone else's house. I tell my students they may get away with that garbage at home but they will respect my classroom and I make them clean it up and sweep before we leave.
I don't blame the kids at first I blame the parents. Once I've told the kids what I expect, I hold them responsible. Same thing at home, if Steven's friends thought they would be leaving before things were picked up they were wrong, and I made their parents come in and wait for them while they cleaned up their mess.
