I'm back inside already, no problem staying warm. Unlike Al, I actually like to keep the house heated (although Karin would disagree - she thinks 20C is way too cold and is always complaining that she's freezing).
NAF, do you do deep litter in there? I wonder how much that would raise the temp.
Yep, the kind of wood stove you have (and isn't a fireplace insert a wood stove??) makes a GIANT difference in how quickly it eats your wood.Electric was out for a few this morning.BRRRRRR! Luckily we have the wood burning fireplace insert. We use it for supplemental heat, but it burns up the firewood like toothpicks!![]()
well woke up and I am out n on a heating pad probly for the day . That will teach me to be so careless, took a step last night and heard/felt that special grind of bone on bone...bullied myself thru it and didnt do to much.. wish I hadnt done that when I woke up and took that first step ugh...

Most hatcheries don't want you to know what their real flock looks like. They use pencil drawings of what the breed is suppose to look like.....theirs don't always look like they should. Just compare the SLWs I posted to ones that come from a hatchery.....I had both but don't have time right now to go find the pics. Got to get back to work. Later...........just a quick rant why the heck does hatcherys use pencil drawings for a picture of their birds? seems like bad mangement to me morning @hennible![]()
Yes. I shred the leaves from around the house and barn and put them in giant plastic bags. I also purchase pine shavings from the co-op. I mix the two, adding some of each every other week or so throughout the winter. Some, but not all, is removed in the late spring. Never completely clean out the coop (this goes to the "no such thing as a clean coop). The old stuff has "stuff" in it that inoculates the new bedding. I don't think it adds much heat but it is never wet.
I hope you are feeling better soon.![]()
I joined the Wyandotte Breeders of America breed club and got a list of members. I contacted three by mail (only mailing addresses were included on the list) that were relatively close and only one responded. I drove three hours to meet him and got a trio that he wasn't going to keep for his program. I had the cock for a year and rehomed him with a neighbor who just wanted a handsome bird for his egg layers. I kept the hens. One got egg bound at 2 years old and I put her down. The other died last winter. She was almost four. She raised chicks each year and was a great momma.
I have Icelandics and have had them for 4 1/2 years. I got them after I did the research I should have done before I got the Wyandottes. I love them and they are a perfect fit for me.
