Dixie Chicks

I'm back inside already, no problem staying warm. Unlike Al, I actually like to keep the house heated (although Karin would disagree - she thinks 20C is way too cold and is always complaining that she's freezing).

Yep, house was 45F this morning.... there is a reason I spend most of my time under a blanket.... and need to take turns warming my hands under the blanket.

NAF, do you do deep litter in there? I wonder how much that would raise the temp.

From Alaskan people who do that.... not me, though I really should

It can raise the temp 10 to 18 degrees F. Or something like that. It is pretty much a very active compost pile.

Electric was out for a few this morning.

BRRRRRR! Luckily we have the wood burning fireplace insert. We use it for supplemental heat, but it burns up the firewood like toothpicks!
Yep, the kind of wood stove you have (and isn't a fireplace insert a wood stove??) makes a GIANT difference in how quickly it eats your wood.

When we upgraded our wood stove, it was a monumental improvement, TOTALLY worth the cost.

well woke up and I am out n on a heating pad probly for the day . That will teach me to be so careless, took a step last night and heard/felt that special grind of bone on bone...bullied myself thru it and didnt do to much.. wish I hadnt done that when I woke up and took that first step ugh...

Did you break a bone? Why are you not at the hospital? This is not something that can be fixed with a bit of super glue!!!!

I am cold..... brrrrrrr

We did start up a fire, but it takes a while to get the temperature of the house back up. DANG! My right hand has been out of the blanket too long, it is getting a bit chilled.

Yes. I shred the leaves from around the house and barn and put them in giant plastic bags. I also purchase pine shavings from the co-op. I mix the two, adding some of each every other week or so throughout the winter. Some, but not all, is removed in the late spring. Never completely clean out the coop (this goes to the "no such thing as a clean coop). The old stuff has "stuff" in it that inoculates the new bedding. I don't think it adds much heat but it is never wet.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

I joined the Wyandotte Breeders of America breed club and got a list of members. I contacted three by mail (only mailing addresses were included on the list) that were relatively close and only one responded. I drove three hours to meet him and got a trio that he wasn't going to keep for his program. I had the cock for a year and rehomed him with a neighbor who just wanted a handsome bird for his egg layers. I kept the hens. One got egg bound at 2 years old and I put her down. The other died last winter. She was almost four. She raised chicks each year and was a great momma.

I have Icelandics and have had them for 4 1/2 years. I got them after I did the research I should have done before I got the Wyandottes. I love them and they are a perfect fit for me.
just a quick rant why the heck does hatcherys use pencil drawings for a picture of their birds? seems like bad mangement to me morning @hennible

Most hatcheries don't want you to know what their real flock looks like. They use pencil drawings of what the breed is suppose to look like.....theirs don't always look like they should. Just compare the SLWs I posted to ones that come from a hatchery.....I had both but don't have time right now to go find the pics. Got to get back to work. Later...........

Alaskan I need to borrow your voles... The oldest three... WE HVE SO MUCH SNOW!!
Sorry for yelling but it is amazing how much snow is coming down...
Third time in two days I've shovledd this

It could bear the weight but the melt would be the problem....
Vehve, Mr engineering how would you put a roof on this deck?
Once I recover I got to go do the greenhouse... Holy **** I'm pooped...

That big yellow wall is 8 feet tall... the bank up against it, I put there in the last two days... it's less than half of the snow that was on the deck.... Yes I'm looking for pity.... On the plus side it smells nice out there, I can smell the neighbours grow op... Lol

That's their driveway down at the end of the shot, through those trees is their house... They are not friendly.

Well no I didnt break anything it's all in the pieces it should be for the most part.. I had old injury all the ligaments in my knee were torn, so I have knee issues..and they refuse to give me surgery and I kinda like to aviod that anyways so dont press...anyways if I am not careful or move thoughtlessly at times when I twist or turn the knee stays one place the bottom goes another then when you step it snaps across the knee joint and grinds back into place...

best explination I can give you
