Dixie Chicks

I know alot of us have gardens and such...does anyone do anything special to incorporate the chickens in the garden? or use the waste bedding chicken poop ect?

I have this line of bushes that I made a trench along the side and when we empty the goose pool, (every 3rd day), we run the icky poopy slimy water through a hose to water them. Works great. I think manure tea is good and also if you compost it with things like shavings , a bit of dirt.

If you are asking me- I don't sell chicks so I end up with a lot of permanent roosters. I do sell or give away eggs because they do not carry Marek's. Marek's can't survive on an egg. If I visit someone with chickens, I shower , clean clothes , and leave the house pronto. I do not handle their chickens. If anyone came here that had chickens, I would not let them out back. I have chicken shoes outside only for chickens. I stopped selling eggs because it appears that my eggs never give a good hatch. I don't know why.

For anyone wanting to prevent Marek's in their flock (99%), buy hatching eggs or hatch your own. Or get hatchery chicks-they usually have no contact with adults. Do not buy chicks or chickens from any other flock. Vaccinated chicks can also carry Marek's if exposed, and spread it. The vaccine prevents tumors, but nothing more. All my chickens were hatched at home. I broke my own rule and bought a pullet from a silkie breeder. 6 weeks later the trouble started.
yes thats why I quoted you...because was directing the comment to you I dont know if anyone else has a contaminated flock here far as I knwo noone else does... did I mis use the quote thingie somehow? so do you hatch out your own eggs? I mean when all your chickens die will you get more do you bring in other contaminated birds? is ther some sort of I dunno mareks carrying flock organization?

had you quarantined your silkie pullet before??? did you use a bird from your flock to sacrifice to a possible contaminated bird?

sorry my understanding separate isolate for least a month then introduce a member of your flock that if it becomes ill you wont die over see if the new bird does anything to it them after few weeks introduce is that infact not the safe method of flock integration?

oh thats a clever idea... I like it... I do something similar with my fish tank waste water in the garden

Huh, doesn't look like it qouted right... anyways, x2 on what seminolewind said about Marek's and eggs... it is not transferrable through the egg and isn't carried by it... if there's any worry, simply wash the egg... it is shed in the dander, so no dander no problem... :)

I dump the ducks pool in my raised bed every time I empty it... the mint has now outgrown the bed and is preading like wildfire, lol... huge bushes from tiny little sprigs Jim's mom gave me...

Jem, plant lots of mint and basil... mosquitoes, flies etc do not like them... we only have issues with the teeny, tiny biting gnats... :/

if mareks causes the birds auto immune systems to be supressed lowered ect.... would that cause fertility issues? I am honestly curious I dunno if this is a touchy subject or some weird chicken tabboo I just have lotsa questions and frankly rather discuss it will ppl with experience n stuff instead of looking information up that may or may not be true source wise... One of the reasons I did the whole hatching eggs was to close some of the options for contamination ect.... I know there are STILL egg diseases that can be carried into your flock from eggs but as far as I know mareks is the only one that once you have it even the ground is contaminated for chicken raising...

I was kinda wondering if there are like mareks chicken rescue groups or some such....

:ya :celebrate omgomgomgomgomgomg   :celebrate :ya    cuteness overload!

Thought you'd like that pic, lol... :)

Jem, things like Marek's can be touchy subjects... some people say cull no matter what, and others are trying to breed for resistance/survivability, etc... there are many different types of 'camps' on those subjects...
I agree about getting info straight from a good source, that's why I've been reading the thread 'Not an emergency... Marek's in the flock'... lots of good info in it and good people who care about their animals... it's a long thread (haven't finished it myself yet) but it might be a good read for you when you get time... :)
