Dixie Chicks

Man, this board is def like a box of chocolates.....this morning it is septic caps (who doesn't have one?) and I swear that there was some post about group sex...or maybe I read it wrong... and property lines and encroaching suburbia. Gotta love it.

Question: There is a two day heat advisory here...should I take momma hen, new chicks and still infertile eggs under momma into the house that is airconditioned here....in the cat carrier they are already in (but inside the coop?_) All the chickens are panting...heat index will be 105 to 110 F this afternoon. I hate to disrupt ma hen, worry her sitting eggs will be just toooooooo hot for her; she is being such a great mom...I think the more tolerable temps would be worth the disruption of moving the entire nest and contents into the kitchen here.

Morning everyone

@Mahen100 I think that was 'sexing a group' of quail... :D

As for hen, if she's not moving then move her... way too friggin' hot...
Btw, she has chicks? Why is she still sitting? Just curious...

 I draw the line with animals being involved, but whatever

:lau

As to the hen with two adorable chicks....she still has (probably infertile) eggs under her. On the slight chance some of my coo coo chickens were still producing fertile eggs that were laid into her nest. I haven't taken away the infertile eggs laid in her nest while she was eating and away from the nest each day. I figure she will eventually "discard" them herself. She is still trying to hatch them. Maybe she is right on one or two????

I know where the tank is on ours but alas the cap is covered. At least by knowing where the tank is I have a pretty small area to search for the cap. In the 9 years I've lived there, I haven't had it pumped. Leach line seems to be in working order still.
We have to get ours pumped ~1/year. Now with our house construction we'll have to upgrade ours. Talk about $$$$$. In our area if you own 10acres of land or more you can do a "pump out", but because we have less then that, they need to install a proper leach field. Right now it costs us $180 to get it pumped.

Morning everyone

I'd move her, or what about putting a fan in front of her crate?

I got out a fan...a safe one, but yeah....decided the security issues here made bringing them in the best option. I have had some sort of "sneak thief" that killed a group of fully feathered chicks the first night they were outside...and more recently a three month old hen was snatched from a netted grow out pen. So until I identify and trap...catch that predator,"locked in safely" is my best option. I need to really secure my grow out pen so that it can function as one. I turned on the oscillating fan and pointed it toward a shady area for the free ranging chickens to find when it gets really hot. Mom and chicks are in the back room. :)

Ugh... please remind me my flock is closed and I'm broke... lol...

Your flock is closed and you're broke. However, you can sell something(s) on Ebay to make some bucks to support your , ahem, hobby. I had lots and lots of "toys" I have sold in various places because I had good income when I bought them and now I don't, and I've had to sell a lot, including my Kawasakii mule (4 wheeler ).

RAIN, GLORIOUS RAIN!!!!!

It won't last long, but

with the current outlook hay prices are way up.... hopefully more rain and farmers can get a second hay crop this year. Otherwise we are looking at $200+ for a round bale of hay this fall.
