Dixie Chicks

They look nice @Beer can , but you know I am partial to Sussex. Even though I've had bad luck with them. I have some mixed breeds with SS roo and RIR hens that look similar to your red Sussex. They are good egg layers and loud mouths!

@Outpost JWB I just read today that sussex/RIR cross is in the UK like the sexlinks here.
What 'bad luck' did you have with your sussex? I must have missed it.

Ok, not funny anymore! I was in the garage working on tranny lines on the car we just bought, cursing NY salted winter roads, come back inside to find wife's chick ( it's her's!) free ranging in our house! Do they make mini diapers??!!! Why do they poop so much!!

After I threw it back in it's box, it jumped back up on roost, I asked it if it could PLEASE stay outside tomorrow, it said "are you talking to me?"

Grrrr!!! I want this thing OUT!!!

@Beer can ,

I was gifted a Speckled Sussex chick 2 years ago:

Not the best pic of Sue, but it's 3:25am. Not going out there to snap one! LOL!

He is and always has been awesome! He is the flock leader.

I've purchased 5 or 6 SS pullets around when he turned one year old. My intent to breed and carry on the SS bloodline.

Every SS pullet has died from various issues. One got sour crop, two got killed because they flew into DH's dog's pen, pretty sure one died from Marek's although I didn't have her tested. She got sick, had a dropped wing & would not make eye contact. I separated her from the others and put her in a pen in the garage. Got her back to good health within a week. Thought she was doing better, but not willing to take chances. Put her in a little coop and she was able to free range in a small patch of the yard. She did good for another couple weeks, then she started falling over randomly, one of her eyes turned blue and her wing dropped again. She died a seemingly slow death. Poor girl. The others, just died from random unknown causes. Then this year, I ordered some from our feed store who gets their SS chicks from Meyer Hatchery. I had the order in when there was snow on the ground. They didn't get any. I got a phone call the week that I was suppose to be getting them that said Meyer Hatchery said their rooster must not be fertile because all the eggs were infertile

They can borrow Sue! He is fertile!

Anyways, I have tons of mixed SS chicks, and still love the breed. Just had some bad experiences. More than any other breed.

@Beer can , More pics!

@perchie.girl brightened the above pic! Looks a lot better. But my phone camera is still crap. LOL! She did great with what she had to work with. Here are a couple more pics for him. They are all moulting and he has lost a few massive tail feathers.

Here is a Sussex/austolorp mix pullet. She is super friendly.
Here is a grown Sussex/austolorp mix. I have 4 or 5 of them now. It's a very good mix. They are very friendly, good egg layers and they look like silver Sussex. Maybe they are. Not done the research as to the breeds involved. But like I said, it's a good mix.

Birthday party with granddaughter went good last night. Step daughter was even pleasant when she came to pick her up, which is not typical.....but welcome.

I'll try to post some pics with my RIR/SS mix tomorrow. Have a good day!
