I am having a hard time getting the girls to use the nest box they seem to like the one corner under the henhouse atm...but been trying to get them to stick to the nestboxes...many of them started laying when I was away and my chicken tender didnt know to keep an egg or two in the nest box....

I still havent gotten a dummy egg or two

Golf balls work in a pinch.... Or smooth round rocks...

I totally get that!

From what I understand, chicks tend to be pretty clean, it is older birds, or birds that have touched the rest of the flock that are more likely to have issues.

There is one hatchery... Uh.... Country something? Anyway, they sell color choices, you can pick black, blue, chocolate, white, or assortment. A couple of those colors are pied, one is solid. Anyway, I think it is the only hatchery that offers chocolate. Some have a grab bag of colors that might include chocolate, most carry only white.

Oh and here is the Muscovy hatchery that has chocolates

deb "a digging fool tonight"

Yeah that's the one I mentioned awhile back. Strombergs also has them under 'show ducks'. Strombergs also sells duck hatching eggs, but doesn't list Muscovy as ones they sell, maybe they do if you ask? Their prices look high on their poultry, but shipping is included in the price.

MuscovARRRRRRRGGGGGG!!!!!

I want Hen's light brown Muscovy girl!!!! :barnie

She's cute but you should have seen the sister, also brown and white but darker, so pretty. Kid named the white one Bridge, lol, weird kid. I found a conservation breeder that has scovies an hour a way so I can get some new blood down the road. The pair are not related but they are aunt and uncle to the ducklings... The big male has mild angel wing, it supposedly developed after he was an adult. He is just growing in some huge blood feathers now, the joint is loose and easy to set right, think I'll wrap the wing see if I can correct it... Can't hurt right?
@Alaskan do the males tend to have issues with their feet if they get too heavy? Ever heard that?

Oooh The same site for the Muscovy map has a nest box article.... I think this may work for guineas with a modification or two

one barrel would make four nest boxes

Talk about easy to build

deb
Easy to do, just have to find barrels, people around here seem to want $40 for them!

I have 4 nest boxes, 2 of them have a golf ball in them. My chickens all seem to prefer to lay in the top left nest box that has the golf ball in it. My new Ancona duck lays her egg with the bottom row golf ball. I am still surprised to find her eggs a foot off the ground in a nest box!

That is cool, I didn't think they were that hard to come across, at least not in my area. here..

I just couldn't find them in town, even though I know someone has them here.

$40 for those barrels! Yikes!
Before hubby switched jobs I got them for free, wonder if his old boss would snag some for me...

Sad thing is they probably get them for free from work like I do. We are NOT supposed to sell them, but some do

.
I have a couple 333 gallon square in a metal cage on a pallet totes with bottom valves, got them free. Kids school bus driver wants one for maple sap, but wouldn't give me a offer. Said he's looked at a couple at auctions but they were dirty, had motor oil in them. I see them on Craigslist for $160. I don't want to rape him but I don't want to give it away either.
