Just saw a ad on our craigslist, someone has more than a dozen khaki cambell, selling fertile even, dozen eggs for $2!! If my chickens were not crapping out tons, I'd buy them!! Made some more pickled eggs yesterday. Tried natural food coloring, boiled some red cabbage, strained, added just a pinch of baking soda, turned blue just like they said, knew there might be problems adding it to vinegar salt brine, yup, some bubbles, and turned color back....dumped it, would work good for frosting etc. Used what was left of red/purple cabbage juice, way darker than beet juice pickled eggs. Made some plain, some onion and garlic, some doubled up on habenero, four orange inferno ones scotch bonnets? Made some with cayenne pepper powder, our xtra fridge has a few gallons of qts pickled eggs in it now. If you plan on boiling eggs, DON'T store them flat, put them in a carton, I had many 2-3lb? plastic coffee containers full of eggs in the fridge...yolks settle on one side, right next to edge of egg...don't think that happens in a carton.
