Dixie Chicks

Most of the snakes around me are harmless king snakes with the occasional copperhead. I would have been frightened of Beer can's snake too, it didn't look familiar to me!

@klucky: That is a LOT of snakes! Are they on land where boulders abound or near a large lake? I forget that the country around me has had destruction of habitat for wildlife and many subdivisions added since I first lived here.

I've raised a lot of chickens but I have never had one do this before, and don't know quite what to make of it. I was cleaning out the coop this morning, and had taken the cat carrier (I closed the door to it weeks ago so that young birds would not sleep in it). The hen who had hatched out a clutch in that carrier seemed to be very interested in it on the ground by the coop. Anyway, as I stood at the side opening to the coop and dumped shavings into a cart, the chicken checked out the carrier, and then slowly and deliberately walked between my ankles brushing both legs with her feathers. It is a large English Orphington, and she was acting for all the world like a cat rubbing up against its owners legs. I stepped sideways, and dang if she didn't turn around and come from the front and rub between my calves again. Very weird. She's a sweet bird, and doesn't mind being handled, but is not a lap chicken. I wonder what her "nest" being moved had to do with it? Any guesses?

We have several ponds

Thanks. Hopefully the pipe will be fixed soon. Hubby......well....He said he feels better today. Good thing. Headed to the library to get a stack of books so DD won't drive DH crazy so much. :D

:hugs

Hang in there... hope he gets better and water isn't too bad to fix...

They hatched great, then all died within.minutes of each other 2 weeks later. In a brooders full of other chicks and I didn't lose any other breeds. :/

Seriously??? Well, flock! Or as Alaskan so eloquently likes to put it... :sick

My sister-in-law killed a snake last night, coming out of her quail pen. Figured out why she hadn't been getting many eggs - she cut it open and it was full of them!

yeah, strange and sucks

I'd think it was some kind of deficiency in the breeders since none of your others were affected... hmmm... never saw them post more of those either???

Ewwww! :D

Sorry about your chicks mini. My hubby is feeling better. Good thing.

I'd like to know if any of you have strange egg customers.......I've had a handful of odd ones. Had a man call me, he lives over 100 miles from my house, and he wanted eggs. Then he goes on to explain that he was given an incubator. He has tried several times to hatch store eggs:rolleyes: Then someone told him he needs BROWN eggs to get chicks:lau. So, poor guy, tried a few dozen brown eggs. You know, refrigerated, washed, he had no clue. Then someone told him that the "farmer" has to have a rooster. His next question to me....."You got a rooster?" I gave the man a bit of advice, hoping he understood. Told him to call me if he can't find any hatching eggs local.

Today a new customer came to the house, DH told her that DD would be right out with her eggs. She immediately ran to the backyard in her sandles and yelled "Here chickens!". She was promptly greeted by 100+ chickens that surrounded her and then she freaked out and started whaling "Your chickens are pecking my feet!" Who does that? I was still at work, but DH said it was all he could do not to bust out laughing. Sorry I missed it.big_smile.png
