Dixie Chicks

I'm am getting a couple more silkies. Eggs for my broodies to hatch. I want to get a few more Black or Blue copper marans. I'm almost at my space limit but I have a few girls who aren;t laying well and are older so I don't want to OD on the chicks. Just enough for replacements by next winter.

Edited to add: Have I said I want to do the EHAL!

LOL you might have mentioned it once or twice...how do you find having your silkies say over your average type chicken do you find the silkies need more care or anything?

most surprising to me was when I finally had roosters..... OH MY GAWD are they funny.... Also how really smart all chickens are.... I had always heard that chickens were dumb... but they are not.

when I was down with asthma laying on a matress on the floor. I didnt own a bed frame when i moved in to the house... I waslaying there dozing and counting the time for my next dose of medicine.... No TV no books couldnt read... could barely get up to feed the horse and chikens in the morning.

So when I was laying there dozing... back door was open so I could watch chicken TV on occasion..... I heard this Awwwk awwwk awk.... Looked at the door and there was a red hen... Rubbernecking the room.... and just be hind her was another saying.... "Gladys is it ok ???"

I threw a sock at em and they scurried out of the bedroom then I had to stifle laughter then the subsequent coughing fit....

I hat three roos managing my flock at the time.... Boss man was Waylin, second in charge was Willie, and third rearmost was Bubba. again I was laying there the hens were doing their henny things and the Quail were filching scratch and acting like chickens scratching in the dirt like they were on Crak.... Then the roos disappeared around the corner..... All the sudden I hear a blood curtilng scream and here Comes Willie running and flapping.... And Waylin Flapping and running behind him with a beak full of Willie feathers.... Then here comes Bubba walking along.... "When's dinner.... "

Got me through about four days of heck....

no fun being sick and miserable.. I am so glad you had something to bring a lil joy and laughter into your life when you need it..I loved your description of your birds personalities thats great!

Back atcha, Jem!

Doing fine this a.m. and about to go hit a few hours of yard cleanup before the winter storm warning hits this afternoon. Rain in the p.m. and then a day or so of snow starts tonight. Spent yesterday trimming rose bushes and fig trees, then deep watering....only to come in and hear the storm stuff on TV. Kind of like washing your car will make it rain.

Anyway, in answer to your question about the most surprising thing discovered about chickens.... When I first started with chickens I dealt with getting boxes from the hatchery and whole flocks at a time. A lot of them were parceled out for sale to folks and I had a meat bird flock. They were just a mass commodity of birds. I had one RSL layer that I had to keep inside and nurse back to health who was a little bit friendly. Well, when I started hatching for my own small keeper flock it turned into a whole different thing as I raised these from egghood on... I was surprised at how personable the birds are and that each has an individual personality. With masses of birds kept in the short-term (or those that I didn't want to get to know as they'd be on my plate) I hadn't ever developed the relationship with them that I have now. Yeah. They're like real pets!

No my silkies seem to do pretty well with the rest of the crew. I worry a little more because they are broody more and are right now again during the extreme cold. And this time they have separated.

Lucie and Ethyl aren't friends this time. I'm afraid they won't eat enough to keep them healthy and warm. But they seem OK. They ventured out on some straw I put outside for the girls to walk on. (Otherwise all the girls here are afraid of the white stuff).
They don't take up much space and only recently did one go up to the roost with the big girls. And they are so cute and friendly. Except Lucie this time while being broody, she doesn't want me to touch her or her imaginary eggs.

But her peck is not much either.

that brings up an awesome question! How do people handle processing versus raising their flocks? How do people deal with the loss of a chicken they may or may not be attached to when maintainting their flock be it for processing for meat, or a bird just doesnt fit into your breeding program overall idea of what you want your flock to be like??

For Myself.. I am friendly to all my birds I'm of the mind that I try to give them the best lil feathered life they have with plenty of shelter, food, affection ect..and they gift me with substance to feed me and my family...but not everyone is like that how does everyone else deal with it?

thats interesting one of the reasons I kinda steerd clear from silkies is I thought they would need more care be more suspectable to cold and stuff.. I guess I had a mental imagine of them... plus I am afraid of the jokes I will get for having such an oddball chicken hehehe not trying to say they are oddball but I know I'd get teased lol
