does it ever get cold at your place?

I know that the temp swings can be pretty crazy in the dessert

Oh yeah relatively cold.... Coldest its gotten though is abut 5 degrees farenheit. Always at night though. Expect a forty degree difference between night and day through the winter. Actually most of the year. Summer time there will be a shorter gap Like say 20 degrees... so 110 during the day will produce 90 night time temps.

I often have ice on the waterers.... but by the time the sun comes up its got a couple of access holes for drinking.... the Horse is a pro with ice... LOL. Never more than a inch thick and never long enough to intervene.

We do get snow if there is any precipitation.... Never more than 72 hours worth cumulatively.

But to make up for it all we have WiNd sometime hurricane force... When its cold and windy thats when we crank up the heat... I use space heater for the bedroom. to bring it up to sixty no more.

And you know the vagaries of weather when wind is a factor. We wear several layers of clothing and keep the ears covered.

You also have to remember There is a stripe of Mediterranean climate that crosses the earth in this latitude.... Even my desert is part of that climate. I sit between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez when we get wind from the south west it smells of ocean when we get wind from the North east it smells of Ozone and rarified land fried pure air... awesome. We even get fog on the rare occasion.

What is really odd is to see rain falling over head and it not hitting the ground...

@perchie.girl , That is a great deal! We heated with propane last year until the furnace died. Replaced it with an electric. Much easier! But we do still have propane backup heaters in case electric goes out. That will be good to be back on your own. I don't know how you do it. Love my step mom and dad, but NO WAY could I live with them. I'd sleep out in the barn with their goats and donkey first! No kidding.

@City farm , The youtube video was hilarious and true! DH keeps threatening intervention. I know that if I have not planned a party and I see more than 3 cars in my driveway that are not mine, keep on driving. Don't stop! They have staged an intervention. I have mentioned the nanny goat idea. Only to decide that milking a goat will ultimately become another chore for me to do. Another chore that I don't have time to do. He has been the one pushing for a steer. I think the cost of feed & shelter are not feasible at this time.

@RavynFallen , Sorry about your silkie

. It is always amazing to me to think that the bully is one chicken and it turns out to be another

. When we were feeding the chickens last night and noticed Bad Eye's foot was bleeding, I watched to see if any were picking on her. She is the runt of the litter. Then when she went to get a drink, our very small black australorp pecked her on the head.

OH WOW! 4:45am. All the roosters just discovered I am up

. They are all crowing like banshees! We did an official count last night. We now have 43 hens and 16 roosters. It's a wonder my neighbors don't shoot me. Well, I gotta get to work. Late day today and tomorrow.

Ahh, very nice to clean the house properly after getting that bird out. I emptied the vacuum cleaner before I started, and it needs to be emptied again. Although, a lot of that is dog hair, our Neato's battery has outlived it's purpose and needs changing, so he's no longer doing his daily chore. But now it once again feels like you don't get a mouthful of dust every time you breathe in.

Ok, it's now been 72 hours for my sprouting experiment, so far this doesn't seem all that efficient. Next batch will be soaked for a while.
vehve, Rinse the grains well and then try soaking for 4 or so hours. Most grains will do well with that, in my experience. I do one kind at a time but a different one each day rotating (right now) barley, wheat and BOSS. I rinse mine in the kitchen sink because I have a sprayer there that makes it easier. I rinse them twice a day. Spread them out so they are not deep, maybe three grains/seed heights and no more. They do not need light to sprout, just warmth. I rinse in warm water and keep them in my laundry room which stays around 70F. They're ready in 3 to 4 days. I don't sprout year around, only when there are no fresh green things outside for them.
