OH CRUD

Just read that the H5N2 bird flu virus was found in a professional turkey farm in Minnesota.

It hit so hard that over 1000 birds were dead before they discovered it with another 800 will be destroyed.
So far none has been discovered outside this facility but all backyard flocks nearby are being tested. Minnesota
is the largest producer of turkeys in the country so this is going to be quite a hit for them. It is also the first time
bird flu has been found in the Mississippi fly way. The migration season is just kicking into full swing.
Everyone I know with a flock is now officially nervous.

Crappy
And crappy timing as well ( the migration ).
My area has stayed clean so far, no where near the lower mainland where it hit, plus nothing will be migrating here for another two months so maybe we will stay lucky...

For a couple years now, it's been forbidden to free range poultry from March to May, or was it even June here. They can be out in a covered run though. But something similar might be a good precaution for you guys too.

We might be hatching soon again. Emma seems have decided to set up shop in a nest. She was sitting on some eggs, so Karin switched them for some golf balls. If she's still sitting on Monday, she's getting a sixpack of green eggs under her. She's our meanest hen, so I think we might even be able to raise a batch without the separator. That would make things a lot easier to manage.

Hilma is taking it easy in her tractor. We had to put up a temporary fence around it because the dachshund was a bit too interested in our new addition to our petting zoo. It will take a few weeks for her to get used to the idea of a bunny in the yard.

My muscles are already aching, I'm going to have to dig out a ton (literally, and by literally, I mean the previous definition of the word, not the newly re-defined meaning which now also covers "figuratively") of frozen soil from the raised bed tomorrow, plus some more underneath where the foundation for the bunny hatch is going to go. Luckily it's going to be a warm night, and even warmer day tomorrow, so it might thaw out a bit more still. There's only a few inches of frozen ground on the top. I might even be able to lift the frozen layer as a whole piece from the two raised beds. We're still planning the layout of the hutch, but the footprint is going to be 8 by either 5 or 7 feet, and it will probably be a two story construction. That way we can separate it into two compartments if needed. I will try to document each step of the build.

Sam, a metric ton as in 1000kg, so about 2200 lbs. I dumped about 500kg of soil into those two raised beds (plus another 300 in the two others, but they're not getting moved). And the soil is wetter now. Plus, I have to dig down about a foot underneath the whole area where i'm putting the hutch. This build is going to be a great workout.

Congrats on the pip, I forget, what's cooking?
